Pretty much every recipe calls to gut animals being ground for bait base. Muskrat, groundhogs, beaver.

The reason most of us do this is because it's always been understood that it's recommended. I get the bacteria etc considerations.

However when my urine foxes eat a muskrat or rabbit the first thing they do is rip the guts out and eat them.

So have you tried guts in grinding? Any consequences? Any observations regarding animals response to bair?

Give a coyote a whole rabbit and the first thing it does is eat the head

Brains are fat. Wild animal predators all crave fat. Add some good fish oil. Get it from the fat in the abdomen of spoon bill or catfish. Sun rendered trout oil is real good too

PS i dont know if he has any on hand but Bob Jameson sent me some real nice trout oil

IMO pressed oil is about useless

Bruce,
I've always wondered about this too. I've never ground the guts with the carcass, but have used about every organ in critters as bait. I'd cut out the big part of lower colon with the turds in it and maybe open stomach and dump contents then pitch the rest (minus the head) over in the grinder.

Bruce, good question's. Fish is the only one I have ground up guts and all. I just used normal amounts of SB. no problems. For example Big Bellied Carp. Would most likely be a big mess? As would other high volume plant type eating animals.
Organs are good to have in a bait. Maybe a little organic stomach contents would be good? Dogs love fresh creamy Cow Pies!! Eat & Roll on the stuff. You cannot keep them away from it.
If you have a BIG grinder and could grind bones & all minus the head of say a bobcat carcass. It should make a great bait base because of all the organs, bone marrow, glands etc. all mixed together!
I am planning to do this with some mink carcasses and ageing them to a paste? Just for fun. Working on a Super coyote Roll Lure! lol.

I have never added it to a bait but coyote stomach contents with no additives sure work good in a dirt hole

I've had some success with the stomachs in the spring and late summer.

I've always felt there's nutrients or something in there that the canines crave. My penned fox rip the guts right out of a skinned muskrat.

So do we not grind them guts in because the piece of paper tells us not to? Or is there valid reason?

I have 10 gal of groundhog ground guts and all. Have been stopped for 2 years. Comparing that experiment base with those that were gutted, not that much difference. Not sure what the coyotes think yet

Never found a good way to preserve stomach contents other than freezing them. I'm guessing the stomach acids are a game changer compared to a normal base. Just speculation on my part. They will preserve, but never the way I want them. Kind of a sour end result.
