Ive been learning on the Duolingo app on my phone for about a year. Its going good, I think I could have a written conversation with someone and spoken if they slow way way down, its tough when the words blend together.
I honestly started learning it, thinking of using Spanish for mission work or something church related later in life.

The United States is an English speaking country.I strongly resent going everywhere with signs in spanish, even asking on the phone. We are being over run by these wetbacks. learn and speak English or leave ! Yes Sir. Back in the day with the influx of immigrants at Ellis Island they came here and adapted, become Americans. That's the way it should be imo. How do y'all think we survived as a Nation this long? It wasn't by division like so many coddle now.

Every citizen should learn English absolutely. Also absolutely nothing wrong with learning a 2nd language, including Spanish.

Does anyone on here speak Spanish? When did you learn and how?
I know a few of you lucky guys married Spanish speaking ladies did they teach you?
It would help at work and with some friends that we hang out with. And maybe the next exwife lol You might know more than you think. Nevada means snowy. Sierra Nevada refers to Snowy Saw(toothed) Mountains. Montana means mountain. Lot's of Spanish especially in the West.

Yes Mixtec and Zapotec are two indigenous Mayan based languages that are widely spoken by a lot of the immigrants from Oaxaca state in southern Mexico. One of the nurseries I do business with has a crew that speak Zapotec. They speak Spanish to me, but among themselves just Zapotec with a few Spanish words sprinkled in.
Interestingly, the Spanish spoken by Mexicans has become quite bastardized with english. For example the Spanish word for "pickup" is "camioneta" but most Mexicans now call them a "troca" from our "truck". Same thing for "clutch "and "brakes". El "clotche" and las "brekas".

All languages get that way at some point. Many Spanish words that start with al- are derived from the Moors when they occupied Spain. Ojal (hope/pray)is the most obvious Moor derived word.

Took 4 years in highschool. I can read and speak it. Trying to translate spoken Spanish by a natives speaker... I might catch every third word Bingo!! Perdi' mi tiempo aprendiendo buen espanol! Took four years in school and thought I was fluent with proper Spanish. I still have trouble talking to the Latin guys that work for me around the place. They all must have lazy tongue.

If you want a useful language for the future you should learn Mandarin. Learning Canadian was easy, all I had to do when I worked there was add "Eh" to the end of every sentence. Gotcha! See, ya don't need no Rosetta Stone, just a crafty mind. ELgetterdoneO.
