What does everyone use as far as poles go for snowshoeing? I have a pair of black diamond that I use for hunting, do I just order the snow baskets and put them on or does someone make an actual snowshoeing trekking pole with a bigger basket? I知 pretty green getting into snowshoeing but would like to do that on the trap line for next year. All thoughts welcome.

I use hunting skis, which are similar to snowshoes, but never I use poles, like for cross country or downhill. It just doesn't seem necessary, since the surface area of hunting skis/snowshoes provides enough support and stability. With actual snowshoes, walking sticks don't even contribute much to the momentum, since you do not slide forward. I sometimes use a simple walking stick, without a snow basket, to brush snow off traps, among other things, but to me, having both hands free is a much bigger advantage than anything trekking poles can offer. I typically cover about 3-6 miles per hike/trap check, sometimes more and never felt the need for poles, even though my routes include some relatively steep slopes sometimes. But it's just my own experience...

I have to agree with Tatiana on this one. To me a pole(s) were a liability when snowshoeing, especially in brushy country.
I will carry a 'walking' stick but that is mainly for knocking snow off the brush in the trail.

That all makes perfect sense I値l have to just get them and then see if I need the added stability of the poles, I知 not really that worried about using them to help propel just more of keeping me on my feet as I知 on the clumsy side but at least I have poles that値l help for an added cost of about $10 for snow baskets if I feel the need.

I agree with Tatiana. I have never used poles, I prefer to have my hands available for other things. I have pair or so of poles that came with snowshoes I bought. But I've never used them.

What Chicken said, I will also carry a machete for the same purpose as well as making sets ie marten poles and cubbies. [Linked Image]

Old ski poles are what I've seen people use. Working slopes in the brush etc poles can sure enough save you from doing a face plant. The biggger the basket the better.
