I am looking on line for a program that will help me with GPS and location that I can save to my phone. I plan on fishing and looking for places to trap without getting lost.

Onx. I use mine for deer hunting, fishing and trapping. Works good on my iPhone plus all my waypoints are saved to my laptop automatically as they are entered into my phone. Can basically scout for land ownership, contours and road systems right from the couch.

All smartphones cone with gps enabled mapa, Google or apple. Just a matter of figuring out where you're facing and being able to hold the line of travel.

Do you get directions on the river?

I have a small basic hand held GPS unit that stows away anywhere including a pocket. I enter the jump off point if in new country and I never think about how to get back. Im pretty good at wandering.

Never used it for that as far as telling me how to go. I just look at position and where i want to go. If you're river has navigation hazards then a nautical chart app would be good to have.

But must have signal and degree of resolution can be iffy.

I am old fasion and like to have a paper map like fishing hot spots or similar I can see details on paper yet I don't see on a screen

I have a GPS with auto draw and for a little on the computer scouting I have a online map https://usa.fishermap.org/depth-map/castle-rock-lake/

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I also carry and use paper charts or maps.
Not prudent to rely on any single thing for navigation. Personally I usually know exactly where I am at all times. Not comfortable otherwise

You're less likely to lose GPS signal than cell signal. You can have the areas predownloaded. Resolution isnt an issue if your goal is to get home. If you're flagging sets you're better off with handheld GPS.

Learn to use a map compass and astrolabe and you will always know where you are.Even in the middle of nowhere.

I have a marine chart plotter on my phone as a backup, usually only need it on super foggy days but it is handy and shows all the aids to navigation and a chart of the area. Also works on land, and I believe it was free,"Marine Ways" at the app store.
