Hello, it is legal to trap coyote year round here but I am wondering if people here only go for them when their pelts are prime or do you just trap year round?

Thanks for any thoughts on the matter.

No fur value in the off season.
Animals are trapped in the off season for various reasons-fur is not one of them.

What about countries that don't have winters, do their animals still get "prime" in various parts of the season or are they always just lower value.

Thanks

what is your reason for trapping ? fur only , then probably not

I mostly trap to help our friends and family these days so if there is a problem that needs removing I don't worry about prime.

everyone has different reasons for trapping none of them wrong.

if your goal is predator control so you can enjoy more turkeys and fawns get a better chance at living. then it doesn't much matter if the fur is prime

if your helping someone loosing chickens , it doesn't matter.

Not for free. If someone wants to pay me, OR can trade permissions to hunt or fish etc then I’d trap em in the off season, but nobody has offered yet.

Critters in areas that don’t get as cold will still get “prime” BUT there is a big difference between a prime Texas coyote and a prime Ontario coyote.

Last question, do fur farms have "prime" seasons to harvest? Like so they breed in spring and let them grow out until winter or harvest year round?

In theory fur farms could harvest year round. Temperature has nothing to do with wether a fur gets prime or not, it’s all about the hours of sunlight in a day. Shorter days sends a signal to an animals body to begin preparing for winter. So, I know nothing about fur farms, so I don’t know if they actually do, but it is reasonably possible they could harvest year round by keeping the animals in a dark room to mimic winter photo periods. They do it with show animals all the time.

I know nothing about fur farming either but I would think temperature would have an impact on the quality of the prime fur put maybe not...

Mink farms have used controlled lighting for a long time.

Temperature and genetics will play a part in fur density.......how many follicles per square inch........but it is daylight that controls the priming process.

Take a Texas coyote to Minnesota and he won't grow better hair than he did in Texas.

Most mink ranches seem to be located in places that are cold. The lack of UV rays entering the pupil of an animals eyes triggers the hair growth cycle. After the trigger, it appears multiple things may control the rate of growth and quality of the finished product. Most animals go through a molt, also I believe triggered by light.

A lot of people confuse fur quality with primeness.
