I caught a beautiful grey fox and hung him up to dry skin out yesterday morning with th plan to flip him fur out last night, but my son had a basketball game which we didn't get home from until late. Once sll was said and done for bedtime, I forgot to flip the fox and it feels too dry to do so now. I do not intend to sell this pelt but tan it myself later. Do i still need to flip it for further drying or can i let it finish drying skin out?

Leave it fur in if you’re going to tan it yourself.

Eh...wot?

A damp rag wipe down should soften any hide enough to let you flip it, just don't get in a hurry. Let the moisture soak in and the hide soften without getting it too wet. I've done this a number of times with cats and fox.

Is there an advantage to flipping it when you are going to tan it?

No real advantage. Drying fur out is only for grading purposes for the fur buyer and see no reason to turn my furs out if I am going to have them tanned.

Fur out is only for grading don't create extra work unless you want the option to sell.

Yes there is.
If you have a season harvest of dried fur you can grade them and decide which ones will be better to market raw and which ones will be sent to the tannery, and which ones you will tan yourself.
If you only have one and not a season harvest it doesnt matter.Or if you know you are going to tan the entire harvest -same thing.
Sometimes you know if you have a dmg skin that it wont be going to the auction and you will tan it-in that case no need to dry it at all if you are self tanning.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

The only reason to flip is so the fur can be seen, felt and graded. If you’re tanning it for yourself there is absolutely no reason to flip when drying. I have many foxes this season that I didn’t bother flipping because I have no intention of selling them raw for $4 or $5

Thanks! I am trapping for land management purposes only and just trying to make use of the fur. Unless gas prices go down to open up more ground, I doubt I ever get more than a couple dozen pelts a year right now. But if I can learn to make clothing, it may make it worth it.
