The bridge 1/4 mile from our house is apparently the only place anyone in the area dumps their carcasses, it really ticks me off, and there’s usually a couch or refrigerator dumped every year too. I leave my carcasses in the field personally, but I’m not against someone throwing one off of the road where the scavengers will get it, but why into the creek?!

Happens here a lot…for some reason the jack wagons like to dump on public land, right off the parking areas.

Not all of them, a couple DNR folks dumped a road kill deer in the woods at my son’s place. We were working on the porch and I kept smelling decomp. The neighbor came over and told us what happened. He said he argued with them about taking it away but they drove up the driveway and dragged it 10yds in the woods.

I would have preferred they dumped it on public lane. lol

Slob hunters.
At least take it off the road into the brush.
I never understood why morons throw dead animal parts in the creeks.

I don't have a problem for the most part with people putting carcass back in nature. But when they dump stuff right at trail head or edge of boat ramp parking lot for everyone to see. Just don't make sense to me other than their lazy slobs. Worse is when they bring it there in bags and leave that plastic crap too. Probably drove past dozen better placed where would been out site.
Just more ammo for the bird watcher to hate on hunter.

I don't get it either. I don't think it has anything to do with trying to get by and raise a family. It's laziness and bad ethics

Animal parts decompose. Around here I dump carcass and butcher scraps where beef producers put there dead livestock. Its gone pretty quick. Even most of the bones. Plastic and cans are forever. Even paper decomposes. Its pretty fast too if you live someplace it rains. Lots of people here have private dumps on their property. That burning plastic stinks. At least the ash's dont take up much room. Tires get get tossed out in ditchs a lot. landfills all charge when you find one that will take them

I have literally thousands of dead salmon in these streams every fall. They decompose and feed the aquatic creatures. I would imagine any dead animal ( if not too many) would also do the same?

Just when I was fixin to consider looking for a better class of drinking buddies, I run into a bunch of dirtbags in here. Guess I'll have to keep lookin somewhere else.
Puzzles me as to what the deal is with ole Catch though. He has jumped all over me in the past for no reason I could figure. Its like a pastime for him to make enemies out of folks he knows little to nothing about.
An old dairy farmer I know, a true gentleman, used to say about Catch's type, "We need fellers like him." He wouldn't say anything further. The rest of us would look at eachother with puzzled looks on our faces and the light would eventually come on and figured out what he meant.
Without saying it, he was telling us that "We need fellers like him because it makes all of us look better in comparison."

With the passing of each year, there appears to be an increasing number of deer carcasses appearing on roadsides and in streams or rivers. These dumping practices are not only illegal, but unsightly and unhealthy.

I am an avid hunter and spend most of my working days trying to further the sport of hunting and the conservation of the natural resources of our state and our nation. But not everyone feels like I do. Some spend as much, or more, time trying to outlaw hunting as I do trying to further it.

While I totally disagree with those in our society with such beliefs, we as a group of hunters, should not do things to further the cause of the anti-hunting public, or give those that are indifferent about hunting, a reason to oppose it. In other words, we should not spread the byproduct, or the carcass, of a successful hunt in areas where other people have to view it or in areas that could cause a public health issue.

There is already a law prohibiting such activity. Section 97‑15‑29 of the Mississippi Code of 1972 prohibits the dumping of dead fish and wildlife, their parts, or waste on Mississippi’s roadways or their right-of-ways or on private property without the landowner’s consent. If caught, an offender can be charged with a misdemeanor and fined up to $250.00.

Dead deer on the side of the road can be a hazard to drivers. In some instances, they could cause some serious damage to a car, or injury to the driver. This dumping is happening when no one is around, therefore making it very hard to catch the culprits.

Deer carcasses dumped in streams and rivers can pose a human health risk. This risk comes from the drinking and/or swimming in waters contaminated by decomposing deer carcasses.

Roadsides, streams, and rivers are not options. Two recommended methods of disposal are digging a pit in which to place the carcass or taking it to a deer processor who will properly dispose of or compost it. This is legal and respectful to the sport. And if you can’t do that, place the carcass in an area where it cannot be viewed and it is not near any homes. It won’t take long for the coyotes and buzzards to salvage the rest of it.

Anyone who finds a deer carcass on his property is obligated to clean it up and report it to law enforcement agencies. Please take time for appropriate carcass disposal. To report a violation, call your local sheriff’s office or the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks at 1-800-BE-SMART (1.800.237.6278).

James L. Cummins is executive director of Wildlife Mississippi, a non-profit, conservation organization founded to conserve, restore, and enhance fish, wildlife, and plant resources throughout Mississippi. Their website is www.wildlifemiss.org.
