Had a coyote checking things out last night. Looks like it barely missed the pan, but possibly there’s too much crust. It is a post set (sort of) that I made with a 3” diameter log and drilled a hole in the end of it which I then packed with bait. Then a dab of tri-nitro and a shot of grey fox pee on the log.
I’m planning to just let it ride as is. But curious what anyone else thinks.

I'm would be interesting to know which way the air was moving at the set last night. My guess is left to right.
Remember obstacles like trees and hills will alter the direction. Just like water moving around obstacles it creates eddies and swirls

That is correct, and that’s prevailing wind, good lesson learned.

Stick another trap right where the tracks are.

“Stick another trap where the tracks are”

I might try that when we have snow in the forecast again. Adding a trap there now would require really blowing the area up with chopping a new trap bed into the frozen ground, and that has never worked for me in the past. Seems to be best to make new sets right before snow to get a good natural covering.

Anyone have opinions on adding new bait or lure to the set to get that coyote to maybe work it again? I’m wondering if that one will ignore it from now on since it didn’t find anything good there, and if something new might draw interest again? I’m usually inclined to keep tweaking things, but I’m trying to break that habit since it hasn’t worked so well, need all you experts to convince me grin
My trap line consists of 2 sets on 7 acres behind my house, so I need to take advantage of every chance I get. 1 coyote and 1 grey so far this year.

Thanks for any advice

I would leave it. I think you’ll do more harm than good disrupting it.

I would leave it and add a few more sets. This time of the year instead of two sets I make three because they are pairing up and it's nothing for three to be together. Sometimes I see where I catch one and two more lay down in the snow and wait there with it.

I like your set. Looks like it worked. I think you will get that coyote. The main thing is nothing ''bad'' happened to it.

If you keep missing it is easier to move your attractor than you trap.

A coyote was back, stepped all over the trap, even bit and pulled on the log backing.
I checked it out and found an ice pancake on top of the waxed sand.
Cleared it all off yesterday and then got a perfect 2” of fluffy snow to cover everything back up.
Now the wait… [Linked Image]
