Due to the heavy snow we got in November and and the lack there of in the past few years bison are migrating out of Yellowstone in unprecedented numbers. As fast as they come out the various tribes that are allowed to “hunt” them (it’s really more like shooting fish in a barrel) kill as many as they can before they run back into the park. Sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. I have a bird’s eye view of this circus and in normal years find it somewhat entertaining but this year it’s become more like living near a slaughter house. I’m not against it but I think the government should allow more non tribal people, aka residents of Montana, to harvest them as well. What a mess over there.

you would think they would start laying a few bales on the snow outside the park a trail of bails one every 75-100 yards and lure a LOT far out of the park then close in behind and shoot in mass.
I mean what is 10 when you could have 100 or 500
it is a shame only the tribes can hunt them.
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Racism at it's best.
It's been months since I bought the book, "How To Scam People On Line". It still hasn't arrived yet.

I would rather see em eat buffalo than government handouts. Hopefully they are not wasting it

The skulls from a nice bull is worth selling. Surly they are selling those?

I know of people going out there and offering to help them in exchange for hides, heads, etc. As far as trapping wolves yes you could but the traps likely would be stomped on by buffaloes and hunters. We’re talking about an area that is flat and maybe a couple hundred acres.

There should be no special hunting/fishing/trapping rights for the them... They never "owned" the land, no tribe ever stayed in one location. They call it culture, but then use modern scoped high powered rifles... If they want to claim cultural rights then they should be using culturally appropriate equipment. Just another group who wants special and extra privileges.

After they lower the buffalo population what are the wolves going to do? I think they ate all the deer and elk already. i bet bears and wolves both start throwing a bigger loop

An amazing migration this year. People need to remember that there are always resident tags issued each year for bison hunts and in each season of the bison hunts. It isn't just Native American Tribes that get to hunt the Bison during these hunts of leaving the Park. It is an amazing thing to wath them during the migration and winter months.
A lot of years there those licenses are in the neighborhood of 75 or a bit higher and this year I believe it was at ~40.

Political and racial tensions aside. I'm glad that people (whatever kind or color) are able to harvest them. Good eating and a passable way to deal with surplus population. it’s really more like shooting fish in a barrel For those that don't have experience with buffalo, this is true of most buffalo hunts (at least those using modern firepower). Part of the nature of the animal. The most successful "hunters" of the 1800s would "get a stand" on a group of buffalo and shoot them all, often several dozen per day. If the animals couldn't smell you and if you were far enough away that you didn't look like a threat, they'd continue grazing while the whole group dropped one by one. That's what the old-timer journals suggest, and, being experienced with buffalo and having shot several myself, I can attest that it's the way buffalo are, especially those that are somewhat accustomed to human interaction. Their "flight" buttons have to be pushed quite a bit harder than those of, say, deer or elk. Also, I was able to spend a small amount of time last summer on tribal land talking with tribe members about buffalo. They were people just like any others, and they had a passion for buffalo, for their land, and for their community. They had the freedom to use the animals however they liked (although these buffalo were owned rather than "hunted"), including the sale of hunts and meat to non-members. They considered it a tremendous blessing to see and interact with the buffalo, but most of all they were happy to use them to support their community members. I have a hard time finding fault with that.

I have absolutely no problem with the treats for the Native American. A person can go right down the line from the farmer up that get benefits the average American does not.
