Figured I would keep going with native fruit trees and do a video on the native crabapples in eastern North America. With all the non-native ornamental crabapples that are sold many people don't even realize we have native species. Great plants for pollinators and wildlife and are also great for larger properties when allowed to form a thicket.

I have what you call the Prairie Crabapple what is known around here is the Iowa Crabapple.
They are not planted but come up on their own.

You somewhat mentioned sprouting after a fire but do they top kill easily from the fire?
So far My burning has not killed any of them and I haven't noticed any sprouting.
Tho the burning may take a few years to kill some trees I have noticed.

Dirty D - The effect of fire can vary depending on a lot of things. Crabapples will top kill, but the fire has to be hot enough, and time of year can also have an impact, as does the size and age of the tree. Where I am at the restrictions on burning make it tough to get a hot enough fire to kill much of anything. I end up disturbing a lot of thicket producing species with a chainsaw. Labor intensive but it works.
