They say bobcats like creek corridors. So do coons of course.

I don’t have any coon, but I can’t seem to keep the foxes from finding them. Both reds and greys. Not much you can do about it except make extra sets so that one one gets plugged up by a coon you’ve got a couple more still working.

This cold front moving in should put the coons to bed for a while. Going to finally feel like winter here.

True, k snow.
The last month sure has been warm.
We've held on to quite a base of snow though.
Ps. I hope the possums stop moving too.

AJE, have you been successful yet? How much longer of a season? Following your quest.

Tried a few pail sets for otters (experiment) coons sure like sticking their heads in them. I tell the grandkids that they are ringtail otters. grin

Even with dog proofs guarding both sides, I will still put a couple sets in each location. [Linked Image]

I will sometimes put sets within feet of each other, other times it’s within sight. I really like corners of the roads.
I really would like to what goes on in a critters head when it sees a buddy or even another species caught. I sometimes wonder if they sit there and think you idiot, there’s something right here that smells better and then they get caught. I’ve wondered who shows up first. I know on cameras with coyotes and bobcats, the coyotes were always caught first then the cat comes in to look it over, then they get caught.

I hope you succeed in your quest. For the record, my 8 sets produced a possum too.

Have to be careful with setting traps close together. Our local game warden has made it clear that he “could” cite a trapper for having an animal caught in a trap that is closer than 30ft from another trap, because according to him the trapped animal is now exposed bait that is within 30 feet of your trap.

Now, I’ve never heard of him actually doing it, but something to think about.

Gotta love some of these game wardens who interpret the laws as they see fit. Pretty sure you could get that thrown out, but it would cost you more to fight it than to pay the fine.

I have caught dozens of coons and possum in my 16 traps I have had out this month trying for a bobcat...that was after I thought I had thinned then down this fall. No one trapping or hunting them anymore so they are everywhere!

It's crazy. Another coon today. It was in a trap that wasn't set anywhere near water. Frustrating. My neighbor is a retired trapper & said that back in the day I could have paid for my mileage for this month's Bobcat trapping based on all the prime coons I'm catching. I can't even fathom what it was like for you guys back in the day when fur prices were good. I wonder if a lot of what I'm dealing with is male coons moving for mating. I'm up to 32 traps out- still no bobcat.

Coons possums and deer snapped traps are the bread and butter of cat trapping

At least I haven't gotten a skunk this season.

One fluffy, fat coon here this morning too. 14 degrees and snowing and still can't seem to get away from them! I did find a great dry box culvert crossing under the road I had missed all season with all kinds of tracks in it so might move a couple sets off the ends of that today for the last few nights of cat season.
