Due to not having a pickup this season (the family grew and we traded the pickup for a suburban), I’ve only been able to run about ten sets by four wheeler from the house. My cat sets are about a mile and a half up a canyon from the house, I know there’s at least one cat up there but I just missed him the last time he came through. Was checking them yesterday and I found another cat had passed through, and actually stepped over my set, thank goodness, cause it was the wrong kind of cat! I really hope I don’t end up having to release it

My trap is an exposed trail set about 6” off camera to the right

Why you got to release them?

NDOW classifies them as “big game animals” and therefore trapping is an illegal means of take. I can buy 2 tags a year over the counter, but even if the season is open and I have a tag in my pocket, if I get one in a trap it has to be released

When I first looked at the pic I was trying to figure out what that coin was. It took me a second or 10 to realize it was a snuff can.

I'd love to catch one of those big cats once

So once you release it, then shoot it. Good to go, you gave them a chance.

I've had to release two this year. It can be a real rodeo for sure. The first time catching one was kinda cool to see one up close like that. The coolness goes away pretty fast though when it's time to figure out how to release it without getting tore up. Now there's nothing neat about it, I've gotten so I really hate them.

Been seeing way more lion activity in my areas this year for some reason. Bobcat catches and sign have been down too. It's as though the big cats settle in to an area and the smaller cats split.

Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads.

Shoot it then release it or call the conservation officer to come release it lol. Releasing a Bob cat and an otter was interesting enough for me. I don't think I would want to release a couger. Definitely would be interesting.
