I call it tin foil because Mom and Dad did. Probably was tinfoil back in their time. Yup no more antenna to wrap tinfoil on. But a hat made from it sure does keep the aliens from listening to your brainwaves

I find that aluminimum makes for a lighter hat , especially in the summer.

Foil made from a thin leaf of tin was commercially available before its aluminium counterpart.[2] In the late 19th century and early 20th century, tin foil was in common use, and some people continue to refer to the new product by the name of the old one. Tin foil is stiffer than aluminium foil.[3] It tends to give a slight tin taste to food wrapped in it, which is a major reason it has largely been replaced by aluminium and other materials for wrapping food. Because of its corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, availability, low cost, low toxicity, and slight malleability, tin foil was used as a filling for tooth cavities prior to the 20th century.[4]
Thank you, Cliff Clavin. All kidding aside, that is interesting information.

I'm pretty sure another reason aluminum has replaced tin in making foil is the price. Right now aluminum is around one dollar or less per pound, and tin is about $16 a pound. Also aluminum being so much lighter than tin, it will make a lot more foil per pound.

Yep, I remember when we had tin foil... I guess it was probably in early 50s when I remember there being aluminum foil.

Anyone else remember lead foil tinsels on the Christmas tree? I wade that stuff up in ball was wicked coming out slingshot. The first stuff I remember calling aluminum foil. Was Alcoa wrap.

One side is dull while the other side is bright and shiny . Learned why when I was about 6-7 years old.

Mac Yep, got you covered... I remembered grandmas smoothing it out after being used, folded it neatly to be used again. I didn't use the lead foil in sling shot, but use it like a spit ball in a small ball shooting it through a straw... lethal at 10 feet or closer. Garry-
