I recently purchased some federal 22 rounds. They are round nose lead. Tried to sight them in and and I'm getting way to to many fliers. No consistency. I had been shooting Remington gold hollow points but I couldn't find them. Well yesterday I found some, got them home and all the bullets spin in the brass. Is that an issue? What is the best 22 round?
they are a rebated base so spinning isn't an issue although it tells you you especially don't want those to get damp it will get to the powder
for targets I like CCI Standard Velocity , they are not the most consistent but they are much more consistent then most people can be at a decent enough price that you have to pay 2X as much to do really any better
now every gun may prefer something different Use , Cost , consistency and need for consistency
for game CCI Mini Mags are what I buy
for dispatch only I have boxes of bulk 36gr hollow points and my dispatch gun set for those not shooting that far so cheap and plentiful and what was available
how long since you cleaned your gun , when a 22 that was known for making really good groups now patterns the barrel is often leaded up and a good scrubbing with brass brush and run some patches to clean it , then you need about 50 rounds of 22 to "foul"/ "season" the barrel before you get your best groups again but it should improve groups considerably after the cleaning if that was the issue.
I bought one Marlin 22 with a very dirty barrel I assume the guy thought the barrel was shot out because it made a pattern not a group, a good cleaning and it makes nice groups. you basically can't shoot out a 22lr barrel , you can abuse them out but not really shoot them out too slow and too soft of a bullet
blazer is my go to for plinking , it cycles my 10/22s and my Ruger semi auto pistols well and is a little less consistent than SV but also less cost and more around at about 40 a brick where SV is more like 55 a brick.
if we are just banging steel for fun or shooting cans or having fun Blazer comes out of the range bag
CCI makes Blazer same company it is their bulk budget line of ammo

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.
Depends on the gun, I have a couple that will run anything with acceptable accuracy but then I also have an ATI Firefly which i bought because it was cheap, at the time 185 dollars and I wasnt disappointed it was a jamomatic with everything I tried in it, but because I bought it just to use for dispatch and to bouncy around on the fooorboards of the truck I didnt really care, it was surprisingly accurate though, but then I tried a box of Agulla standard velocity 40g lead and it runs that like a sewing machine and will stack those bullets in one ragged hole at 25 yards and is even more accurate with them then my Ruger mark 3 with its heavy bull barrel
I have noticed that there is a lot of questionable 22 ammo hitting the shelves lately even from what many would consider good MFGs, probably because their rushing to profit from the buying frenzy of the last few years

Did clean the barrel after i ran out of shells. I do believe i shot at least fifty rounds trying to sight in. I use it to hunt squirrels. When it warms up I'll try these new rounds to sight in.

I have found several pistols prefer 40gr standard velocity ammo
the high velocity stuff may need a longer barrel to burn the powder while the fast and consistent burn of the SV ammo behind 40gr seems to cycle the shorter barreled guns better

I carry a pistol trapping and use CCI Segmented the highest velocity. I use it for coyotes, coons etc.and have killed lions taken with my dog, one shot in the lung area. It is more than I need for trapped animals but have added several animals over the years that a lower velocity ammo would noy be suitable.
Cci mini mags or cci stingers depends which gun I have with me. I carry cci hp shorts in my marlin 39 they get alot more done than one would think, they are quiet and it holes 27 if I remember correctly. You can order direct from cci.
I'm talking rifles. Long shots for small game hunting. I do understand not to change bullets when you find one that works but sometimes you can't get those bullets.
Cci have different velocities as with other brands higher velocity rounds cycle better shoots in all my guns. Hv or standard. I don't like the stingers or hyper velocity stuff.
Lots of CCI

For years I thought my Ruger 10/22 was the finest squirrel hunting rifle made. And it is, for head shooting squirrel at 25 yards or so; for me. And I thought .22 Remington Golden Bullets and WW Super X were the best bullets for squirrel hunting there was.
Then I bought a CZ bolt action .22 rifle. More accurate, a higher level of accuracy. If you want to lay out even more money for better accuracy you can step up to Anchutz rifles. My CZ with no wind can do 3/4 MOA at 100y. Anchutz can do better than that with expensive Ely Tenex ammo. But, you don't really need that kind of accuracy to tater a squirrel.
I'm rambling here.
Guess what I'm trying to say is that if you have an off the shelf .22 hunting rifle, (10/22, Marlin 60 etc.) and shooting squirrel and rabbits at woods ranges, almost any ammo is good enough. Squirrel hunting, I still take the same old Golden Bullets with me to head shoot a squirrel at 30 yards or so. Premium ammo is a waste in an off the shelf hunting rifle .22 IMO.
To answer your question on what is the best? I'd say Ely Tenex Black Box at 18 bux a box last I knew. Very consistent stuff.
There are a number of match long rifle rounds being made.
I shoot a vudoo and they designed their action around the specs of the Lapua cartridge. I have also had some of the best results in a couple different cz 457s with Lapua. But Ive also had more lots of various Lapua cartridges than I have eley.
Lapua - x-act Lapua- Midas + Lapua- center x
Sk- rifle match Sk- long range
Eley- tenex Eley- match
RWS- r50 RWS-r100 RWS- r plus
I would put any of these at the top of the list with the best personal results from Lapua Midas +.Lapua also announced a couple new rimfire cartridges at shot this year that are supposed to be geared towards long range precision rimfire
If you arent splurging for what they consider match long rifle ammo I believe that cci standard velocity is impossible to beat however. The cci green tag however is far from match ammo in my opinion and not only not with the extra money I dont think it should even be worth as much as the standard velocity stuff. Every rifle shoots them all different, but the green tag lot I bought a couple bricks of does not shoot as well as any of the standard velocity stuff Ive ever used.
Yeah, Green Tag never impressed me for the price. CCI Standard is good stuff and not that high. Really, anything CCI makes is good ammo. Aguilla Standard is good stuff. If you can find it, Winchester Dynapoint is a good SV ammo. I use to be able to buy it at K or Wal-Mart 2007 for 8 dollars for 500. Them days are gone though.
Also, if you are truly in the pursuit of accuracy- you need to avoid shooting a supersonic bullet. As the bullet slows and transitions from supersonic to subsonic there is a very negative impact on accuracy.
Trappercass. That is some serious bullseye action. I just had the old marlin bolt action on top of a 2x4. Shooting from a standing position. Too much snow here to haul out all the shooting stuff. That group is with the Remington gold hollow point shells.

So, back in the olden times, before al gore invented the internet, Outdoor life tested about 50 different. 22 lr ammos for accuracy.
The first 2 places went to some ridiculously priced Olympic target ammo. Third place was Winchester super x, plain old, copper plated, round nose.
That's what I've been using ever since, if it can be found.
A few years ago at our family get together we had a friendly shoot off. I believe we used 22s simply because everyone had one in their vehicle. Things escalated from that point very quickly and the pursuit for the most accurate long rifles began. You would be truly amazed at the variance in cartridges in rimfire ammo if you start comparing weights from one bullet to the next, or measuring the rim thickness between them. Its a very time consuming process but a lot of guys sort their ammo based on these factors.
It has been one of the more expensive hobbies Ive ever dove into but I wouldnt trade it for anything. We ended up starting a good family group text and have done a better job staying in touch with everyone since the start of our family shoot even.
As much fun as I have had reminding everyone I took the trophy home last year my new goal is to get my young daughter to place ahead of some of her cousins, uncles, and grandfathers this year! Ive probably hijacked this thread enough, this stuff gets me going though!

Cheers
see if you can get her to an Appleseed clinic , well worth what they charge for kids , they get to hear the good word from other people and they get lots of drills to improve their shooting. it is 3 position. prone , kneeling/seated and standing. so it gets them trained on more than just a bench.

The best .22 ammo? What shoots best out of your gun, is a common saying... In gunsmithing school, we used these for accuracy testing:
CCI Standard Velocity (nearly as good as match stuff, but not quite. Good enough for accuracy testing for off the rack guns out to 50-60 yards for hunting. If the rifle and shooter is up to it, will hold sub 1 MOA out to 50-60 yards.
SK Semi Auto
SK Match
We used different bullet types as well to insure no feeding issues.
Didn't see much difference between the two SK's. Eley is good stuff if you want to pay for it, but SK will do the same, cheaper.
