Good looking pup, walking up along side a dog on point is something I really enjoy. If we still had quail around here I would have another.

I got an English setter just now a year old. Had em out again yesterday. Have to drive a ways but got him into some quail. Everytime we hunt him he gets a little better. I let him live in the house with us. Get more attached to him every day. Still flushes quite a few but he stays close. He is getting good at finding them. We hunted some public walk in stuff. Birds were flushing easy. He still got on point twice even with those spooky birds.

Pups are fun and a lot of work. It's cool watching the genetics manifest as they grow. They go from this. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2023/01/full-23125-166781-img_20180406_181607593.jpg) To this.. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2023/01/full-23125-166782-img_20201010_114914462_hdr.jpg)

Twenty-fiveYard, I don't remember ever seeing a pup I didn't like except for poodles. Is your dog going to be a family pet as well? You going to competition it? I tried Nite hunting hound competitions for a couple years. Really soured me on hunt competition. Have no intention to get into it with a bird dog. This setter is the first bird dog I ever owned. Lucky for me he just does it. I never fooled with wings or any of that stuff. I did buy 10 pen raised quail for his first exposure a couple months ago. I put out three of them. He did what he was supposed to so I just killed the other 7 without even putting them out. I was afraid dumb pen birds would screw him up for wild birds. Every time he hunts he gets a little better. I have to drive a ways to get into wild birds. This dog is a great house pet. He hasn't met a human he doesn't like. If a cat runs he chases it but not to bite them. He just likes to play if they will cooperate. Never seen him get aggressive with another dog either. Squirrels get him going. He wont bark at them. Just stares up the tree. So far though out where he can hunt birds he forgets about squirrels. Geese flying over low and honking get his attention but he minds good. I just call him back and he goes back to looking for birds on the ground.

The wire hair from the original poster shouldn't be too bad. The bristly hair will not be as clingy to burrs, but they will get some. If we are going to a particulary bad spot or going on a long hunt, I will hit my dog with a little pam cooking spray. That will help bunches. The soft hair on the brittany or irish setter is a disaster in cocklebur country. My little brother would comb out his dog for hours before it could come back into the house.
Gun Nut This is what I do, I don't know if it keeps him from accumulating them but I do know they're much easier to remove. I'm getting close to be in the market for another pup, my current Brit just turned 6... the puppy pics don't help...lol

I just call him back and he goes back to looking for birds on the ground. Yes, he is also a family companion. The breed is suited to it. The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is bred for its hunting abilities foremost, but is still well suited to a family. His line is strong, he was the alpha dominant pup of the litter. He is bold and fearless, hard charging into everything. I bang pots and pans together while he feeds and there’s not a flinch. I live 10 minutes from a full section of State Land that holds Huns and grouse and also has a small meandering stream that runs though it. In the next week or so I will start running him out there to hone his prey drive on wild birds. I ascribe to the mentality of letting the dog mostly be a dog in the first year applying only the basic obedience commands; give him the first year and the rest of his life is yours. That said I also believe that 80% minimum of a dogs hunting ability is bred into them. He’s going to blow it on birds at first, but he will learn to slow down into a stalk and lock up into his point. He’s already shown that @ 9 weeks old with a wing on string.

Question for y'all bird dog folks.
Why the long haired breeds?
While I understand the protection from weather thing if you're hunting snow or wet and there's not much prettier than a brushed out and slicked up setter.
But you guys hunt in cocklebur country. The coat is to help in the cold weather for sure, though it will require some combing if he gets into some thick burrs. Where a short hair may need an insulating layer, the Wirehaired will thrive. I live where it gets very cold. Today was -27F at day break.

Gun Nut Is that a GWP or a WPG, can’t quite see it from the resolution of the pic.
