Remember my dad calling our neighbor conversation went something like this " Hey just wanted to tell you I just shot my dog for chasing my cows." Neighbor "why are you telling me about shooting your dog?" My dad "Because on the second shot, I shot your dog".
Do not remember Christmas cards being exchanged after that.
my grandpa and his farm partner Jim , they ran their construction business from the farm and farmed.
Grandpa pulls in and sees a bunch of dogs in the hogs just going at them he hops out of the truck pulls his gun from behind the seat , drops the box worth of shells in his coat pocket from the glove box and starts Blasting dogs , Jim hears this and runs out the door (his house is at the farm) , no gun in hand Jim grabs a length of chain from somewhere on the way over and he is beating the dog off a hog then gets the chain around it and holds it up and tell grandpa to shoot it , he does and things calm down a bit , they are looking at the hogs and how tore up they are.
Jim says let me see your gun , grandpa hands him the 12ga pump gun, Jim walks over to his dog that is chained to the porch and as he raises the gun up grandpa says but that's your dog , Jim shoots it , turns around and says that's why he is chained up I saw him running with that lot when I came home yesterday.
they understood a dog is livestock you get attached to and you can't have dogs that chase stock. you don't keep that kind of liability around.
