OK, trying the snares... feel like this can't be right.

They are bright silver... how do I fade tarnish or camouflage them?
Do they really just hang out as seen ? I know you want to funnel with brush etc... how tight can you really make the build up in an area this wide?

Also I set 2 snares on the same anchor... I figured double my chances?

Nice too see you are setting some snare's. Tell us what animal's you are trying too catch?
I would suggest going to The Snare Shop, website. Look up Basic Snaring and read the first part of it. Then Watch their, INSTRUCTION VIDEOS !!!!!! Good basic information!!!

Boiling with baking soda will take the shine off.

I find a quick 5 minutes or less boil with baking soda will remove excessive lubricant and shine, then a quick boil and soak in a light logwood crystal solution will provide a good twig/bark colouring look as in the picture below, with the lower snare being the soda treatment versus the logwood soak. You could probably substitute walnut hulls or tree bark for the colouring agent. Snares treated in this way are scent free, work just like untreated snares and generally blend in very well to the background bush, from the coyote’s point of view. [Linked Image]

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

I usually give mine a light coat of spray paint in the spring. But if I don't have time I have put out new shiny snares and have caught coyote. I think just depends on the surrounding vegetation.

Dont boil your snares unless you live in the deserts of the southwest or the winter deserts of Alaska and Canada and bordering states.

Looks like you are snaring beaver, but even then your snares are too low to the ground. Even beaver snares should be 3-4" up off the ground. You also need a heavier support wire to hold them up there if your wire is coming up off the ground. That light stuff is ok if you anchor high off a tree or something.

Don't worry about the shine, it's dark when the critters are out. Next summer you can camo them.

The two on one stake is bad for snares are one time use only. If you catch anything in the one the other one will get all tangled and ruined as well.

So, I removed the snare and the coyote this am. Is it best to get a new snare back on the anchor this evening or set a new spot? Likely to get one 2 nights in a row, or likely to "cool for a few days?"

So what I do is boil them in spruce needles. You can round up a bunch of those leaves and boil your snare in those, the tannins will leach out of the leaves and dull the snares a bit. I avoid boiling in baking soda, it speeds up the corrosion. Most critters are caught in the dark so I've never paid much attention to how "bright" they are, we have plenty of bright snow on the ground though. It's more important, in my opinion, to have enough stuff around and behind the snare to break up its outline and for it to be free of scent. Find natural pinch points where the critters are passing through and remember that proper snare height is just a bit more important than loop size. The snare in the photos was boiled in plain water then waxed. [Linked Image]

Location matters, I had 4 snares out on my 80 trap line and had two catches.
