I did another shorter video today about why so many skunks get hit on the road this time of year. I am sure many on here already know the answer, but I get asked about this a ton by people so I thought a video might be good.
I had some fun with some of the footage and B-Roll for this one.
I always thought it was the white lines in the road and being mating season. They see the lines and think they’re female skunks and get hit. Thought everyone knew that? They painted our lines yellow and no more skunks.
As always, great subject matter and enjoyable, informative video. Thanks!
If you look into skunk physiology, especially Mephitis mephitis (the striped skunk) there are several authors that mention that they have very poor eyesight, only being able to see about 2-3 meters. This lack of long-range eyesight may be partially responsible for relatively high road mortality. Couple this with increased movement associated with the breeding season (rut)and you have high mortality.
Gulo - they do have bad eyesight. We had a skunk at a nature center I worked at in high school (was part of Knight and Hale Game Calls back when they were still made in KY just east of Lake Barkley) and it would freak out and do a threat display every time you went in the pen. Once you talked a bit he would recognize your voice and come over to get his food and head scratches.
Ahhh... The smell of money! I pick up many road kills in the a.m. that are still good. Being short many just get hit in the head while the vechile straddled over top of them . On these I find them still full of essence.
In the beginning of summer the most babies I ever got with one mother was seven.

I went by there the other day. Just don't look the same since the 4-lane came thru. You ever talk to Scott Shupe? Is he still Around?

petey - It sure doesn't look look the same, I have to think about where I am at on that road now. I do like the new bridges though. It is nice to be able to cross the lakes without worrying about losing a side mirror! Scott is still around and I run into him every now and then. I think Shannon has talked to him recently. I see Harold Knight once in a while at an outdoor store here and there.

Law Dog - Skunks are awesome! They can be a little flighty when around people they don't know, but the ones I have been around (tame skunks) were very laid back around people they do know. Once they figure out someone has food they also seem to calm down right away!
