So I bought a steel drum yesterday and cut it in half hoping to prep degrease/dye new traps. Inside of barrel is coated with some sort of red paint or epoxy coating.. I'm a bit concerned while degreasing that the coating might actually contaminate the traps. I'd just go for it and find out but I need to get these traps done and set. I really don't want to have to redo the traps in my much smaller stock pots as it's way too time consuming.

Thoughts? Does anyone use this type of drum for trap preperation and have success catching critters?

Thanks

Just set a fire inside it and let it burn a while, then scrub it out with dawn and rinse well. It’ll be just fine

I think Bob is correct.
If you are degreasing new traps just run them through the dishwasher.

Lol I ran traps through the dishwasher once. After my wife saw the rust stains in it I decided I’d better not do that again

How are you degreasing? Just boiling or chemical? I've got some honey drums with the same coating inside. Cut one in half and use it to boil traps in. I have not noticed any adverse effects so far in 3 yrs of use.

I will be boiling with a lil bit of Dawn for a degreaser. Glad to see your using the same type barrel. I'm thinking that with water in the barrel the paint or epoxy paint won't be affected enough. Maybe I'm over thinking things as some here spray spray paint their traps and are plenty successful.

If your not going to dye and wax and your just wanting a clean trap to set . I would go to the car wash put the soap to them and then just rinse well . I’ve done it in the past with coyote traps and had no ill affects .

Untill I started getting MJ 600 = they come waxed and ready to set. I would take = 1 or 2 dz MB 550s to car wash. It has a = Engine Degrease setting. I spray them off. The grease comes off. And then. I soap and rise
