Why in the world would we pick a fight? We leave our weapons for the enemy and haven't won a conflict in decades.

This country is under attack from within. In a weird kind of way, the USA is the one we are attacking first. I think it pretty unlikely that China or Russia or anyone else will pick an open conflict with this country and we pick up arms to defend it. Way more likely is that we end up defending ourselves and what is left of this country from our own government. To me that seems the more likely scenario.
