Anyone have tips? I used to travel and hunt but with the baby I'm focusing close to home. I've shot foxes and coyotes but never a gray fox. Very elusive locally. Also wondering how long they stay prime until? Our season runs until March which I imagine is to late for a prime pelt.

My tidbit is use the distressed grey fox sound. I have it on my Foxpro and make fools of the grey fox on our farm on a regular basis. They've been fooled with it so many times you'd think they quit paying attention. I just call them...no shooting involved.

Rabbit distress and be ready, fox will come in very fast within a minute or two has been my experience.

beaver peeler hit on the nose. Grey fox distress and fighting sounds will bring them running. Thick cover is where I find most of mine, they love young pine cutovers that have grown back up for 5 or 6 yearsin my country

Grey fox stay prime way longer than reds or coyotes.

I spent the day with an Oregon wildlife biologist once, on some project or another. At some point in the day a grey fox ran across the road and our discussion turned to fox. This person had worked on a project in W. Oregon on grey fox. I mentioned that it seemed to me that the greys were in pockets, here and there. Much of it being foothill type country, with the balance farm land. He agreed that was they found. I have wondered if you guys in other states have noticed the scattered populations of them?

Here in WV they used to be everywhere but since the Coyotes became common here the Grey Fox definitely seem in Pockets or else just stivking to Brush more than usual.

Grey fox pup in distress... high brass 4's thru a modified choke, 12, 16, or 20... hand held light w/ a red lens.... 10-15 minutes a stop and move. If they're close shoot at their front legs.

Thank you guys, we're going to get pounded by snow this week so I can go out looking for tracks. I know they exist around here but in small numbers. Maybe kill a Coyote in the process.

Gray fox in Minnesota are notorious for denning up during the day in cold weather. I cant tell you how many times I've tracked them into holes in the winter. If the temps are above 25 they are much more apt to be laying outside. If you do track one after a fresh snow and you jump one out of its bed, if you have a partner, put him where the bed was and track the fox. The majority of the time it will eventually circle back to the bed. Not so with reds and coyotes.

Our call sequence because we have a very big overlap of Red, Gray, Coyote and Bobcat doesn’t change a whole bunch. We run a FoxPro for 7-10 minutes baby cottontail, 3-5 minutes of silence, then gray flex distress or fight. We have killed all of the mentioned predators in our area of UpState NY this winter using these calls. In an area we have hunted before we will sometimes start with snowshoe hare, then go into Gray fox distress or fight.
