Not being rude, but I haven’t found a “coon bait” on the market that’s worth the money. I wish there was something that performs better than what I’m using, but when they’ll hit cat food or peanuts equal to or more than commercial stuff, it’s just not worth it to me X2! That hasn't been my experience, but you've got to go with what you have confidence in and what works for you.

Some places that I trap raccoons, I need to catch as close to every last one of them as possible. A lot of times they come by my sets traveling from the dining room, heading to their living room, already stuffed and are finicky. I offer them diced apples, topped with squeeze grape jam, and squirt a mixture of imitation vanilla and honey, with a little anise oil around the set. It has been proven to be my best shot at catching the overstuffed ones. Who passes up desert after stuffing themselves with Thanksgiving dinner? Now I'm thinking about trying some pecan pie in my DPs.

I had a guy one time set up an experiment in about as controlled environment as you can get. He had trail through the center of long old hog building. The raccoons were walking right through it to get from dens to feeding areas. He placed 8 DPs 4 on each side of the trail and baited every other one with my bait and the others with another popular bait choice. The first night he had 4 coons on my bait and one on the other. Further continuous days results were similar to the results of the first night. Over 85% of the coons he caught were on my bait. I didn't even know he was doing the experiment but I was happy with his results. The coons passed several opportunities to get the other bait to get to mine.
After using DPs for close to 2 decades now I am very confident in saying the bait choices do make a difference. It's not about the ones you catch, its about the ones you don't.

I'm contemplating not making anymore until the markets return, but I'm not sure some folks will let me. lol

I was thinking about this thread this weekend so I setup a little experiment of my own here. Each February for the last weekend of trapping season I break out the dog proofs and trap the farm we turkey hunt for coons. It’s not a huge farm, about 150 acres.
Friday I set out a dozen dog proofs and a dozen 220’s. All set on good coon trails, but this is the third year I’ve trapped them heavy and they’re starting to thin out a little.
I am confident with the conibears that I’m killing pretty much any coon walking down that trail. Above it has been argued that by only using cat food and good fish oil I am missing coons
In two checks I’ve caught 16. 6 in 220’s and 10 in dog proofs. I fail to see how I am missing coons
Sure is nice catching them in 220’s though, they’re dry and clean and no gun required
Gotta live up to the nickname...

Unless you run cameras or set your 220s or footholds inbetween the DP's on the trail, how would you know if you had misses? No way to know, I was just using the 220’s as a control for how many coon I should be expecting to catch with a dozen traps. Never said it was perfect science
