Thas is a guaranteed snow day for a day or more here.
But something you northerners miss I'd when you get snow it's snow. When we get snow it's often rain that turns to sleet then snow on top of that. So a sheet of ice under the snow. Worse yet is when it's rain that freezes and makes black ice. Road just looks wet but is a layer of ice. I got on some of that a few weeks ago in my 2wd ranger on my 127mile drive to work at 1am a few weeks back. I got lucky and got clued in that it had into black ice from just wet pavement on the on ramp so when I went off the road I was going slow. On hwy 62 it was wet pavement not slick at all, the on ramp and I 265 and I64 were all black ice for about 45 miles then it went back to just wet pavement. It was odd how the rod went from fine to sheet of ice back to fine. Up north it gets cold and stays that way the ground stays cold and is not warmer than the air and snow blowing in and creates layers of ices.
It does make for good jokes about not being able to drive in snow vs the north but the conditions are not the same at all.

When I was a kid, when school was called off because of snow, we'd drive to town and spin circles in the streets.
Life ain't supposed to be easy.

All that means is that your school hasnt used the allocated snow days built into your school calendar and now they sense that Spring is getting closer they wont need to use them legitimately. We had 2 "snow" days last week and there wasnt anything on the paved roads at all. My daughter said the teachers told them that 8 days were built into the calendar for "snow" days and as of last week they had only used 1. March is the month with the most snow days in the upper Midwest, so I don't think they would want to burn them yet.

Agree whole heartedly that school, at least my area, should have been in person yesterday (and today too for that matter). Roads weren't bad and I was at work early.
They don't count as snow days anymore, they are distance learning days. My kids' school only has 1 snow day built into the schedule (already used up) and now they have distance learning on the days they aren't there. Do a couple activities on the computer and get credit for a day of school.
Same here but 2 snow days and the rest distance learning. Those count as a school day and make easier to call a snow day. I don't like it as lots of parents have to stay home then cause child care centers dont have the bandwidth or room for kids to all be on laptops and the kids miss the excitement of a snow day off of school. We have bad roads but nothing that warrants a snow day today. Although most school districts around here are rural ours is not and the city busses who own the student transit are still running.
Life sure is tough when you don't learn from the mistakes of others.

While agree 100% that they re way to quick to cancel school for a minor snow event if my kids where on a bus that slid of the road and flipped over and any of those on board where seriously injured of worse yet killed the entire state where the accident happened would be in an uproar .So you error on the side of caution .for the sake of every kid and parent that would to a part of a school bus accident .

Snow days should be a thing of the past. What happened to all that Covid money schools received to implement virtual learning during the height of the "pandemic"? I know a few schools who built lavish new turf football fields.... They are a thing of the past here. That's what distance learning is. A snow day is just school from home now. Except for 2 days.

Same here. I was just telling my granddaughter that I pitied her because a snow day doesn’t mean anything anymore. It just means she attends class from her home on her computer. I told her how when we had snow days when I was a kid it meant a day spent sledding and tobogganing with the neighborhood kids.
Eh...wot?

Local schools here used a snow day so all the teachers could attend the K. C. Chiefs victory celebration. No one wanted to teach and no one could stop them! The following day we had an inch or so of snow and they used another snow day!
