I've used the MB a bit and although its not as good as the big #9s it is OK in some situations. Looking to get a few dozen legholds that are more affordable than the bigger traps. I've never used the Bridger. How does it compare to the 750?

All I use is the #5. Haven’t used 750s so can’t compare. The 5s work great but have to be reworked if you get 6” of snow on them. They usually come setup well. I just tack weld the dog closed and little weld on the bar that keeps the springs on. 9s are a lot nicer but I like having 36 traps to set compared to 12.

I prefer to set the #5's, with the conventional dog, rather than the MB 750 system.

I haven't used the Bridger #5, but a friend of mine has some and far prefers them to the MB 750. I don't know if you can use them where you are or not, but for a cheap wolf trap my current choice is the Duke 850, they require a little tweaking when they show up, often times pans aren't level, etc. and I thread the end of the spring rods and put a lock nut on them, and I don't like that big wolf swivel directly under the trap, so I add some chain and move it out. But for less money and minimal tweaking you will have a trap that comes up through a lot more snow than a 750 and doesn't have near the moving parts to freeze down. I caught two wolves in them last month and they held them good, one was a blind trail set and with about six inches of fresh snow over the trap (already covered with an inch or two when set) it managed to only get 3 toes, (also might have been a product of the large pan with the foot not centered in trap, no guiding with fresh snow to direct his foot) but it held good. The other was a nice deep catch. Both had to be reworked after the catch, one bent the pan and the other bent the dog, but easily fixed on the trail and traps were reset.

The Duke isnt "on our list of approved wolf traps yet." The Alaskan and Koro #9s are not either and thats what I have the most of. Thats why I need to get some new traps. Seems like they are adding new models every year so hopefully the #9s will make the list soon. Thanks for all the information. Like AV I dont like sticking my hands inside the 750 to set them so will try the #5s.

I preferer the victor 14 jump as my second choice of wolf trap. I have always had good above the foot catches and very few misses. These trap are also very affordable. I change out the rivet and chain and up grade the both bot with a swivel in the chain.

Wow. I must say, I never considered the 14 jump a wolf trap. I used them a lot for wolverine, early on, but due to poor toe catches, (and out-right misses and pull-outs, and clogged jaws), sold them all.

Is a #14 jump just a #4 with teeth?

I dislike the 750's but I have had very good luck with the Bridger 5 Alaskan for both wolf and wolverine.
Hankit covered the mods. The dog is a weak spot, always gets chewed up but if you weld it closed I've been able
to straighten them out onsite and reset.

Another nod to #5s over the 750. They are a pretty decent trap for the price point.

I got one of the Dukes to try, but haven't connected with it yet. Like was mentioned, I threaded the spring rod and added a nut, also cut down the pan a bit as it is too big in my opinion. I have heard of other guys using them with good luck, not bad for $32.



I got some of the No BS wolf traps to try as well. I've heard good things about them, but unfortunately the wolves all vacated my area, so have not connected yet.

Whie I love the No BS canine extreme for wolverine, I find their wolf trap a bit pricey. It is simply a modified TS-85 beaver trap. It has the jaw spread, to be sure, but the Bridger Alaskan #5, at 1/2 the price, gets my vote for an affordable wolf trap.

Just talked to Marty Senneker and he has some of the new #5s in stock that are a dogless design. Think I will give them a try.

That no BS trap looks like a good one Nate. Im sure you will put it to good use when those wolves show up again.

The #5 dogless sounds like the way to go. Those No BS wolf traps are a great trap, built like a tank!
Nothing special for marten numbers here. I did send in 35 for the March sale so fingers crossed on a good sale!

Are you sure the dogless Bridger 5 is the Alaskan Wolf model?
I know they make one for beaver, but it is not a wolf trap, by any means

I like the 750s. Used the 5s a bit this year and caught wolves in both.

Ryan are you using the regular #5s or the new dogless design ? What type of set are you using them in? I like a blind set and thats where the big #9s shine as they will come up through a lot of snow.

Regular 5s set blind on wolf trails or a couple feet back from bait piles. The snow does slow down the 5s and 750s for sure
