My house value according to the county went up $50,000 this year. Bringing it to a grand total value of near $200,000. We paid $52,000 for the place in 2013. I don't know about inflation, but the county assessor must have stopped at the bar for lunch before he came to my house.

We also owe money on income taxes this year (over $2,000). I have claimed 0 my entire working career and never ever owed a penny ever. I guess I will have to cut back on my lavish style of living to pay more taxes so others can sit at home.

My property taxes went from slightly under $1200.00 per half to over $1440.00 per half. It's around $520.00 more for the year than last year, which is a huge increase. I just paid them last week on the 27th.

Mine went up 18% again! If someone came along with something even CLOSE to appraised value, they would own it! They have my old shack valued at $350k.

I have nothing clever to put here.

I've seen some contest their valuation and get the taxes lowered

I always figured it would backfire on me

I have contested my valuation every time they raise it. Usually lower it a bit but not much. At least with a mugger you got a chance. With government theft you dont have many options

I doubt I can set anyone else's assessments straight but for me I have our main home which has an estimated FMV of 141K and is assessed at 108K. Our 2nd home is assessed at 30 K and has a FMV of 33.3K Taxes are 1604 and 500 respectively. We did not have an inflation adjustment figure but our FMV of our main home did rise about 15K, but almost all residential properties did so the mil rates went down and overall taxes did not rise as much, but could be setup for future years if values stay up.

As to big raises in property tax? Property tax is a state and local issue and assessments are asked for and paid by local units of government to secure a taxable base and help determine mil rates etc. So being that local there could be many ways each local unit of government deals with establishing values and rates and when the changes or assessments are done. Some of you or other local units could have had assessments completed during the time when many houses were selling for as much as 20% over asking price a year ago or so. If you get caught up in something like your FMV could rise a lot. How the mil rates get set to bring in the budget money is the real deal when values are going up rapidly.

Doorbell rings the other day and I didn’t answer. I see a guy wandering around my property and I go outside to ask him what he’s doing. He says he’s the assessor and was measuring my fur shed…I ask if he gets shot at very often wandering around people’s property unannounced!

They have to do assessments from a public right of way here unless you give them permission to enter your property. I think now they have drones they take with them.

We bought our home about 5 years ago for around 150k. The current assessed value is 240k, up 60k this year. Our actual taxes went up 22%. I'm with Patfundine, I'd sell at the drop of a hat if the offer was on the table! Quit my job and live off the state til you suckers run out of money! laugh

Property taxes in southeast PA are sickening. A modest two-story home built within the last fifteen or twenty years in my area will get you an annual real estate tax of over $10,000.00, sometimes way over.

You never really own your home. Even after the mortgage is paid you have to keep paying those taxes. If you don't the sheriffs will come and take your home from you and sell it.

Yup! And I hate that! I just told my wife a few days ago, once we pay off our mortgage we’ll still have to pay $500 a month for taxes. Big time ripoff!

County assessors went nuts this year.Every property owner in Mn. is seeing this.

Hard to argue that property values have not increased substantially. Tax rates could be reduced to achieve a zero net increase or maybe a modest inflationary increase. Lots of municipal job salaries have skyrocketed. Policemen start above $45,000 in my city and nobody is taking the jobs. Wonder what another fire truck will cost?.

Hard to find anything that hasn’t had a cost increase.

I have 30 acres and pay 1998 but now it dropped to 1600 because I don't improve the outside of my house!. Why should I give more money to this crooked State.

My evaluation increased for 2023 by $255,000.00 and I have done no improvements to the property for over 25 years. That is a 66% increase in value. My taxes for this year increased 22%. I have a small 2bedroom, one bath home and live on 2 acres but have 125 feet of lake shore. I am not the only one getting stuck like this. Many people are seeing a 300 grand plus increase in valuation here. Not happy. MN with such a huge surplus too.
And then to add insult to injury, the democratic legislature is looking at bills to take away our firearm and trapping rights. Living on a fixed income with these taxes, I will need my firearms and traps to survive.

You guys are making me feel better about mine. I built our house here in East Tennessee in 2012 4bed/3 ba on 8 acres for $150,000, its appraised at $186,000. I could sell it for twice as much or more. I pay $1,650 in property tax. Have a little shack on tbe Muskingum river in Ohio that i paid $25,000 and taxes are $280 a year. I am no longer gonna complain about mine

Hearing some of these stories makes me feel better about my property taxes. In WV my taxes on a $250K home on 2 acres + the taxes on 137 acres that is separate that I use to hunt is around $1400 a year. On the flip side though we have roughly a $0.37 a gallon taxe on fuel, a 6% state sales tax 1% local sales tax, and we have state income tax.

Mine went up a few hundred this year and that's with the exemptions.
Insurance also went up because value went up.

Ours have doubled in the last 5 years. Wealthy nonresident’s paying astronomical prices for land here have been killing us.

Property taxes are really one of the worse.
Hard to keep up for lots of the retired.
Its criminal when one has to sell out cause the taxes have risen so much that one can't afford where they have lived for decades.

I own 60 acres with half tillable, a couple barns and a 2 story house. the taxes are $4400 a year. I also own one acre with a house a unattached garage and pay $2400 a year for that. That house is a double wide trailer.

I set on the Peoria County farm land tax assessment review board. I thought I could make a difference and try to speak out against the higher taxes here. Each year the state of Illinois raises farm land taxes 10%.That is the maximum they can raise the tax by law. Each year I go to the board meeting and tell them I do not approve. They tell me to sign the paper saying I attended the meeting. It says; I ________________ approved of the tax rate given by the state of Illinois for the year ____________. That's it. No voice. Our county tax assessor told me I can come up with a new tax plan for the state of illinois if I want to. CROOKS!!!!! They are all in on it.

Just passin through

If you have at least 15 acres here, you can get in greenbelt which cuts your taxes by app 75% on land. I recently closed 99 acres that was half pasture and half woods with a creek and their taxes were $388 and if they had put an average 3-2 house on it probably would have raised it about $1200 to 1500. No state income tax or vehicle tax but things are selling out fast.

My property value has doubled in the ten years that I've owned it. Makes up for the losses in my investments since uncle joe took office. You would think that with the hundreds of new homes built in the township each year and all the new taxes they create that the overall tax would decrease. Our township service to its residents is one police officer and a volunteer fire department. No water, sewer or library. I live in the country. They are now buying land to create parks. Parks that they can put ball diamonds on to rent to little league teams. Even a dog park. Who needs a dog park when the minimum lot size is two acres. All these PUD's are required to have a percentage of there land as communal property for their use. They can pay to put playgrounds and ball diamonds on their own property's. Don't get me started. Sheesh.

You gotta love it when you tell the appraiser to find somebody that would pay that. Got more moves than a circus bear. Gasp and moan worse than a broke church organ. Property tax here is horrible. Works out to 1.5% of the nothing about it fair, market value

Charging you to own something, that you need permission to use, that you need permission to improve, that you need permission to maintain, don't really seem like ownership to me.

I can trace my family name, in a direct line, to a corporal in the Continental Army, that survived the entire revolution. I wonder sometimes what his opinion of me would be for tolerating this stuff.

Not here in KS Charles. Almost 10% sales tax and an income tax. Our tax burden has gotten horrible.

High school taxes are rougher when the school system is bad. In my area, One school district has a great reputation, across the street is another Which is really bad. Same school taxes around 7500.00 , but the parents in the “rough school district”. Send their kids to private. Coatesville SD being the war-zone school district and Downingtown, the more desirable. Very important for. New home buyers to see exactly where school district lines are drawn.

Well after reading all this tells me some people have to much house! Live in a less expensive house. I use to have a big house and it seemed like I was working for the house!! ,so I got rid of it now live in a modest house in the woods no one to impress.

Our valuation went up $100,000 from $409,000 to $509,000 this year due to "market adjustments." 5 acres with a 26' x 36' house and a couple sheds about the same size. Thankfully the county doesn't know its a timber frame (I told the assessor it was stick built, he didn't ask what size "sticks" I used) and I they don't know I finished the basement otherwise I'm sure I would be in worse shape.

Take 10% of my income to pay the property taxes on the farm. I may be smart to decide it and build several houses on it to rent or sell out. Get rid of it at the highest profit and move to a small piece of land in the western states where there are miles and miles of government land to Rome on. But they have water shortage issues out there.
