What do you mean by "picture was set up?" Was it all a false story with props and not true that a bear and human remains and broken gun were found together? Or, just that the story was true but the items were arranged for a better photo?

Yes those things were all items he collected over the years and he set them up in a photo to make it look like he found the items together. He was a bit of a prankster.

Its an old story that almost anyone who has spent time in the north would recognize. Nothing against the original poster he would be unlikely to know the story. I have no idea about Bernies past but on this one he's right.

The best of the brown bear men is still very much alive and kicking although his son has taken over the guiding business. Dont know of anyone with the experience Phil Shoemaker has.

I got to spend a couple months one summer at Bill and Morris’s place at the old cannery in Olga Bay. Interesting place and a lotta great history there. Morris was a great guy. They’re long gone now. Have a few friends that guided and packed for them too. Never heard that story about him finding hunter’s skull and bones tho.
