Ok all the videos I've watched, books I've read all seem to say that putting lures directly on the ground in cage traps that the ground ( be that the dirt or snow) absords the odor of the lure necessitating in more frequent refreshing of the lures. Contemplating using the small pill bottles , that I have an abundance of every month, and drilling /poking holes in the bottle sides and placing the lures in the bottle and suspending, by also drilling a hole in the cap and either above the trap or inside the trap at the back of the cage. Thinking that with the holes in the container the wind or breeze will blow through the holes dispensing the odor in the wind, using the container will keep the lure from be absorbed and should it rain or snow the cap will keep it from being washed away.
Putting this out for any comments from those that have more experience trapping than I have
Currently experimenting with 8 holes drilled in the bottle 1/2 and 3/4 of an inch from the bottom of the cap spaced 1/2 inch apart in a staggered pattern

Dig a small depression under the trap (location under the pan).
Put lure in a jar lid or container in the under trap depression.
Preferred bait may be put on pan

I like to put my lure/bait high on the trap via either hanging off a wire or a pipe fastened to the back of fhe cage

If you do the dig the hole and put trap over it thing, you better have the trap staked as some animals will just push the cage over.

In PA coni-boxes & cage traps are always T staked down

Many different theories on baiting cages. Check the ADC archives, it's been discussed at length.

Some suppliers, WCS, sell bait/lure mini cages that are baited and hung in the back of a cage much like the bottle you describe.

I used to hang a feather for coon but decided it's extra trouble for no extra return.

I tend to toss the bait all the way to the back and if possible to the protected side if the cage is tight to something. The idea is no easy access from the outside. I also always use some sort of trailed bait or lure in front and into the cage. All cages are secured either t stake or screwed down.

In cat cages I cover my traps with burlap and then tree boughs over that. Helps eliminate lure getting washed away and traps freezing. I like cutting sponges up into small squares then running a wire through them and dipping/soaking them in lure. Then hang in the back of the cage above a chunk of beaver and tinsel.

Wad up a fist sized ball of grass, make an imitation mouse nest. Put your lure inside of it and tuck it in the back corner. a good squirt of quality urine from the front to back few turds if you have them and your good to go.

I've not used in a cage, but I've used old film canisters like you described your pill bottles to protect marten lure from getting washed away (Gusto doesn't handle precipitation well) or just took them and sunk a screw from the inside through the bottom of them and screwed them to a tree so the opening was parallel to the ground and stuck the lure in them that way. Those film canisters are hard to find now days but pill bottles could be used the same way. If you put the back of your cage up against tree you could even screw your lure holder bottle to the tree like a described.

Thank you everyone for your replies, unfortunately here in WA can only use live traps unless WCO doing control work. My Cages are trip wire ,330 coni trigger, so no pan, secured to trees with 3/32 snare cable and locks so the 2 legged vermin don't walk off with them, my area is infested with bunny snugglers and skinney skiers that seem to think they own the NF, Covered with scraps from old unusable tents over the top and part way down the sides, then brushed in with fir boughs, which is where I'd hang or place the lure container

I use a small twig with a fork. I break it just long enough to reach above the trap pan, around 6 inches and dip the end in a lure bottle. The fork in the twig fits between the wire on top of the cage trap keeping in place.
