I started out 50+years ago trapping marten in west-central Idaho. From there, I trapped marten in southcentral, western interior, and the islands of southeastern Alaska. I've come full circle, and now trap marten in east-central Idaho. Got a real soft spot for marten. I haven't tallied up the total number I've trapped over the years, but it's been a bunch. Not the numbers like the real high-liners in Alaska and Canada, but a bunch. Thought some of these photos may be of interest.

Not real clear, but you can see the scattered white hairs on the neck of this adult female marten on the left side. The males, while breeding, bite and hold the females, and the scarred tissue from these bites grows hairs that are white. Young females and males don't normally have these white hairs.

Pretty marten and pretty trapper. She always bested me on marten and lynx.

I have a marten affliction also.
This is a SE Alaska marten that's extra dark with uniform white hairs.

Awesome! I always wondered if the white hairs meant they were older. Thanks for sharing!

Great shots, and info, Jack.

Always appreciated your fascinating experiences with them, and your sharing of nuances of the different species, worldwide, including Russia.

Marten are among my favorite furries to draw, along with fox and the ultimate, wolverine.

The best hat in my life will always be the amazing contrasting , coloured marten that Trapped4ever, in SE Alaska, trapped and sent to Temple, to build. Every single time I wear it in town, I always get compliments on it. The hat of many colours, with three glossy dark tails draping down the back, against one bright orange hide portion , just in the back.

What gets me the most, with wolverine also, is that deep red-orange , to rich ivory toned necklace bling they have, even recognizable as a distinct colour and pattern in some species. I have such fun colouring in those designs, every time.

You make Fridays so special and unique, Jack .

Marten are such cool little creatures.

Waggler, that dark one is gorgeous.

See the same white hairs on adult female mink and to a lessor extent on female skunks that are mostly black (little or no stripes).

Another characteristic I've seen is that some section produce marten with very grey or grizzled faces, whereas other sections their faces are more like the color of their body. Just another peculiarity.

I agree; Sharon's artwork is almost beyond belief, and it's very difficult to pick a favorite. However, I've got an original that, hands-down, is the ultimate piece of art that in itself, tells a vivid story and says a volume to me.

Seniortrap, west side, thank you, though I always take a deep bow to the photographer whose references are the foundation of any artist being able to do a technical job well. Without the photographer, artists wouldn’t have a leg to stand on.

And Jack’s are among the best.

Jack. That wolverine just had your name written all over it. It belongs with you. One of the best ideas I’ve ever had, was for you to adopt it.

And, see how you inspire us to chime in with our photos and stuff…look at these other great marten shots. I think you continue your biological studies , even now, with every photo contributed here.

To think…all for a hyped up furry whirlwind sporting orange necklace bling, bouncing off the inner fuselage lodge of a Cub ….

Thanks Jack for the post. Had to add to your post with a picture of Jen with a Montana Marten. Shows the orange color of the throat and a grey colored head.

Now that’s what I’m talking about…look at all those colours ! Each one just plush and lovely once dried and fluffed grin

The latest one I got from you, with the small white stripe down the back, deep brown with bright orange bling, he is still on my desk , I move him around as I work. For several months now. I can’t bear to hang him up with my others quite yet !
