The mid march blizzard got here a couple days early. It started last yesterday about 06:00 pm. It normally hits the 14th or 15th. They are saying another 3-5 inches of snow today. That is not bad, but the wind is 30-40 with higher gusts. You can not see trees 100 yards away. At times you can hardly make them out 50-75 yards. I trapped for Delta Waterfowl for eight years and started on the 15th of March, and every year we had a blizzard when I was supposed to start. Right now 90 plus percent of the state is no travel advised. There is two counties in the SW corner that are open. This has been a good one so far.

We used to get a March blast here too. Haven’t gotten much in the way of March snow the last several
Years it seems. I actually miss it….

Just flurries today, trace on the ground and 32 degrees out.

On March 15th 1993 south east and south central PA had 18 inches of wind driven snow It was a wet snow which is not generally prone to drifting .The temps where in the low 30's which is way below normal for that time of year .The drifting snow was so hard packed that it made it very hard to plow Where ever the drifts where bad it had to be scooped out and dumped to the sides to be able to clear the roads . Every one as saying It is March and it will melt quickly However this was not the case this time The temps stayed in the 30's for highs for the next 5 to 7 days and the snow packed roads with all that wet drifted snow on them remained there to make it very hard to drive .And on another later date in March of1958 the same area had a large amount of heavy wet snow that piled up on roofs and trees and caused power outages and destroyed many buildings So hope for the best but old man winter might still have a few unwelcome events for us before spring arries

A snow is one thing, but when the entire state is no travel advised, other than two counties, the fun is over. It looks like I will move snow Tuesday.

Friend of mine rode out a NE blizzard once. Was holed up in a motel room, and said at times, could not see the car parked outside the door. Most of us have no clue what a storm like that is to deal with. The wonder of it......the danger of it.

I look back fondly on all the times I have been snowed in. Many were March storms. Maybe it’s because I was born during a March snow storm. The neighbor lady drove my mom to the hospital and they debated putting the top on her old convertible down on the way there. That night the neighbor lady couldnt drive home because of the snow. She was stuck in the hospital for 2 days.

I remember one when my mom said we needed to hurry and drop some groceries at grandmas before the snow gets too bad. Well, as most trips to grandmas go, by the time we were done with the fresh baked cookies etc. it was too late. Couldn’t see the car parked in the driveway. I remember thinking that was a rip off because it was a Friday that we had off from school, not for the storm, and we were snowed in till Sunday afternoon. If it would have happened on a Monday we would not have been robbed of our “no school snow days!”

Hand in there MJM, April is just around the corner!

One of the worst blizzards I ever saw was mid April. It lasted three days and nights and we could not get out of the yard four days after it stopped. I had the drive way cleared, but the road was blocked. It drifted the sheep shed almost 100 % shut. I went out to check them and if I had not they would have all suffocated. The one corner up at the top of the shed had a opening about three times as big as your fist. I shoveled it all out and a couple hours later the wind switched and it cleaned it out to bare ground. I had a 6-7 foot drift in front of the shop and it all left too. Wind and fresh snow can really move. I always wonder how far the snow came from when I am cleaning it out.

I'm leaving Idaho in about an hour, trying to drive to Rochester MN. Looks like I should take the SoDak route (I-90) rather than North Dakota?

Jack You can look a road conditions for both ND and SD by doing a ND or SD road conditions search. I would not try to get across ND in any direction. I do not know how SD looks. Maybe no better. ND has opened a little more road up in the last hour. But it is closed between Dickenson and Jamestown 180-200 miles I would say. Solid red is closed, dotted red is no travel advised. Yellow is ice. I would guess most the problem is no visibility. When every thing is the same shade of white it is hard to drive. With the wind slick ice would be a mess too. I tried posting a map of ND road conditions and it would not go. I think you can call 511 too and get a road report. They are showing this lasting until Sunday morning early. https://travel.dot.nd.gov/ should give you the ND map.

Jack you may have to drop down to Sheridan then east thru Gillette and on. I do know it is snowing pretty good in that Sheridan area at the moment just north of there anyway.
Sandwiches and blankets in the truck. Be safe.

Central SD was missed this time around check East and West of the river. Checked 511 no road closings on I-90 just slippery spots probably from blowing ground snow.

Be safe, Jack. Go slow. Unless there's a pile up on the freeway, that is usually most kept open.

White17 the snow plows are sending them into the ditch. About 180-200 miles of freeway is closed in ND. I would guess it will open sometime Sunday.

Was that now? If so, it is milder. It has back off some here. I can see trees 100 yards now.
