After my multiflora rose video I had several request for a vid on how to tell the multiflora rose from the native roses. This is a quick video that covers four ways they can be told apart.
Let me know what you think and I hope you like it!

I have cleared all the larger Multiflora on my place but there some scattered about in the woods. Trouble is in the woods there is not enough light for them to bloom. Also all the ones I have left are small scraggly ones, maybe 1-2ft tall at most. So the hairy armpit trick will work for me. I often leave a undetermined rose that I come across just cause I don't want to take out the natives. I know I have some native ones left. As I thin the woods it should help them to bloom. This will help me to clean out the last few multiflora I have left.
Thanks!!

Dirty D - glad it was useful to you! In my area there aren't a lot of the native roses left. Sometimes find a Carolina rose, but there should be around 4 rose species native to my area. I know swamp rose is in a couple places, but fairly rare around here anymore. I'm going to be on bradford pear patrol this week and will also be cutting autumn olive and privet as I come across it.

Anthony, too much snow up here to bother with invasive attack patrols right now. I have a few natives here and there. Mostly in the woods, a couple on the old fence line. The ones on the fence line bloom, don't seem to flower very long tho, maybe a week at most. No bradford pear or privet up here. Autumn olive is on the hit list tho.
probably about 1/2 dozen woody plants and maybe the same in forbs. I've got most of the stuff pretty under control. Garlic Mustard is the worst. I have about 4-5 small patches that I pull every year. They are getting smaller. You have to watch for the occasional straggler popping up all summer long. You miss those and another batch starts.
keep up the the good work on those invasives.

Dirty D - everything is green down here already. It is cold again, but the plants are well on their way. Bradford pears are about done flowering so I need to get to chopping before they set fruit.
No garlic mustard on my place but Mammoth Cave is covered up in it so its in the area.

Just look for hairy armpits! I learned something new today. Thank you very much, Anthony T. What is the best way to cut off the invasive multiflora roses without using herbicide?

run - if you want it dead in a reasonable amount of time you will have to do a cut stump herbicide application after you cut it down. It can be killed with repeated cutting of the resprouts, but I prefer a one and done approach. I deal with tens of acres of this stuff at a time so chemicals are the only option. IMO chemicals are the best invasive control option 90% of the time - faster response, less disturbance than manual removal, and easy to redo if needed. The amount of herbicide needed per acre when doing cut stump applications is tiny and has basically zero impact on surrounding vegetation.

they pull easy, don't resprout as much if ya pull them. a ATV or aa SXS will work fine to pull them.

They will pull, but then you disturb the soil and just prime it for another invasive to take over. If I pulled them out around here I would have an instant explosion of Japanese stilt grass and beefsteak plant. By leaving the roots in the ground and killing them with a stump applied herbicide the native plants have half a chance to get started. Pulling is my least favorite way to remove woody invasives - too much soil disturbance and way more work than 5 seconds with a chainsaw and a couple squirts with a spray bottle. I cut them off at about knee height - high enough I don't have to bend over to spray the stump. The stumps don't last long once dead and if fire is used to manage that unit they are gone the next go around anyway.
