They have apparently been fakes around for some time. Guy that I know was working insect control in marsh. Came upon old hobo camp along rail road tracks. He was digging around looking at old bottles and found Morgan dollar. Thought he had a real gem. Took it to one them coin guys see what it was worth. Turned out was counterfeit not real. He showed it to me and I questioned if it was even ok to have? Not sure what it was made from but looked like real coin to me.

I bought a big pile of Morgans and Peace dollars from the estate of an old man who was a lifelong friend of a buddy of mine. There was just one fake in the bunch. It was well done. The only way that I could tell that it was fake was that it was too thick. They do that so that the fake metal inside (likely brass) makes weight. Closer inspection showed lack of detail here and there, but nothing which really stood out. It did not pass the "ring" test. I real silver dollar rings like a bell when you ping the end of it while it is balanced on the tip of your finger. I was actually glad to have it. Now I know how to pick off a fake.
