What is this green tool?

[Linked Image]

I think it may be some type of splitting maul. I've never seen anything exactly like it. I bought it and the rest of the lot at auction tonight. I could see it being useful to cut roots in the ground too.

It would of course work as a pig castrator, but I strongly suspect that wasn't it's primary purpose.

I don’t know what it’s original purpose was but I bet it could chip out a trap bed in frozen ground in short order..

Barely used. Very little of the green paint is worn off.

That seems to be a likelihood.
It's too solid to be a wedge type tool , like for chopping or splitting wood.
More of a tool for breaking a soft stone , or like material.

I found just the head on Ebay.

They call it a "Vintage Double Sided Stub Root Axe Mattock Cutter KCL Sheild Logo", but they seem to be guessing too.

You will find one in every Rescue shelter (Coffin Box). You will also find them on the Man Trips. Not used much anymore. We have Pnuematics now. But the Coffin Boxes are not accessible to air nor electric. Man Trips may not be either. Just depends where the Fall is.

God please keep they 19 fallen UBB miners out of trouble up there.

What is called a mattock around here would have one of the blades turned 90 degrees, so a flat edge can be used to dig with. Trap bed in short order with it.

I’ve heard the one K52 described called a “grub hoe”. Have never seen yours before Keith.

Turning the blade would be called a Polanski…fire fighting tool.

I love the smell of burning spruce---I love the sound of a spring time goose---I love the feel of 40 below---from my trapline I will never go!

Weuse mattox tools to create tread on the Ice Age Trail. The ones we use have one side like the pictured one. Ours have one side like that and then a wide blade on the other side, so probably why they are not called double as those pictured are. Good tool and when you swing one all day you feel it!

grandpa had one like that he dug sassafras root with. I was really young but always figured that was what it was intended for.

I picked the tool up today. Some piece of crap criminal stole the fire axe and double bit axe from my lot before I got there, which were the 2 pieces I really wanted. I had a fireaxe stolen from another lot, on a different date and a double bit stolen, on yet another date, from another lot, I previously bought from the same auction company. Today and one other time they refunded all my money, rounded up and gave me the remaining items. The other ttime they gave me some of my money back. It still ticks me off. I would rather have the axes. They need to not let people grab their own and other people's items from the sites.

Here's some more pictures of the tool and the other tools I got with it.

Not a grubbing hoe and not a mattox.
