Does anyone here have experience with the breed or have any history with one?

I'm on a wait-list to get a female sometime this coming summer.

A friend of mine had one. Good looking dog but he had to put it down at around three years old. It went totally nasty vicious. It tried to bite anyone and everyone, even him. It was little slow on getting birdie. When it finally got the message it was just okay. He didn't get another one.

Hunted with a male a few times. Hes a runner, and i wasnt impressed when he rolled my 4 month old GSP and had to get pulled off her one day I was introducing her to her first birds.
I used to have a shorthair who would roll with any coon she found, but never unprovoked attacks on a puppy.

To me, they just always look like a German shorthaired pointer crossed on a brittany. They are not common.

I have a 4 year old Boykin Spaniel and a 10 year old GSP. I think the munsterlander looks like a cross between a Brittany and a GSP as well with some spaniel characteristics.

My Boykin is very smart, I trained him on my own and use him duck hunting. My GSP is aloof and is hard headed. Part of the draw on owning a munsterlander for me is because it seems to be uncommon. My Boykin is uncommon in my part of the country, but I think more popular down south. I want the munsterlander for more of a companion dog than a hunter. The only bird hunting I have here around me is duck and dove, not many upland opportunities. I've always been partial to sporting breeds.

If you want a companion that can be an all around bird dog look at wired haired Griffon.

It's likely that your friend's dog chewed a loaded shotgun shell. Consuming gunpowder makes dogs act like that. There's been a fair number of bird dogs that ate a loaded shell, especially if there was a little gamebird or duck blood on the shell aand then turned vicious.

I have 2 Boykins. A 7 year old from NC and a 4 year from OH by way of IN .The 7 year old is the most intelligent dog I have been around She knows English language better than most people do myself included .The 7 year old hunts closer and responds well to hand signals and voice commands And she has a fantastic nose If she gets on scent she will work the cover and not stop until she gets the bird up But she has a knack for staying close enough to me as she is trailing a moving bird The younger one loves to run She needs to be reminded to stay close on a regular basis .But she has a good nose also and is obedient. SHEJUST GETS SO EXCITED THAT SHE SOMETIMES FORGETS SHE IS SUPPOSED TO BE HUNTING WITH ME. They make an excellent team .And I am enjoying pheasant hunting more than I ever did in my 50 plus years of hunting. I got a Boykin also because they are not very common in the state of PA They are both good retrievers They love the water And while I have not yet used them to hunt ducks on small streams or ponds . I would not be concerned that they would not be up to the task . And they both are fantastic house /companion dogs Very eager to please in the field and at home .

Do the Boykins hunt like a springer? Id rather hunt behind a springer than a lab any day, I love watching them lose their minds over scent. I was gonna go springer if I wanted a flushing dog, but man did I ever miss that point!
