The year I started driving 1970 91 octane leaded gas could by bought for .27 /.29 a gallon .That was the lowest octane that was sold at that time And ethanol was not even sold at that time So $5.'00 worth of gas would have been about 15 gallons of gas .At today's price that would be less than 1.5 gallons .And the old leaded higher octane gas was better for fuel mileage .By the late 70's gas had skyrocketed to what we thought was an impossibly ridiculous price of somewhere in the .50 to .60 cents per. gallon range That would mean $5.00 would get about just over 8 gallons of gas That price jump was the number one reason for the explosive growth of motorcycle sales in the USA. Suddenly the higher gas price (than .50/.60 cents per gallon) The sale of foreign made motorcycles influenced by the higher gas price that caused nearly every dealer to have a waiting list if you where trying to buy a new bike in the mid 1979's By the late 70's a good prime coon hide was selling for $25 to $30 . A nice red fox was in the $45 for an average pelt and the best ones would bring you $70 plus a little more sometimes At the same time a brand new Ford F150 could be had for about 7000,00 to 8000.00t People running a trapline before and after working their full 8 hour shift where buying a new truck and paying cash with the money they made trapping Now I REALIZE that things are always changing BUT more than we often consider those changes do not happen at the same rate And those changes affect people's lives in a wildly different way. It had it's downside with fur and trap thieves and people trapping without permission .But a hard working trapper could put some money in his wallet And the size of the fur check would make the hard work seem like it was worth the effort .I don't think I would want to go back to those days But I am certainly glad I got to be a part of them.
