we have some pretty grouse here, too..

black grouse are more difficult to approach, because of poaching

partridges prefer the steppes around here, and so do quail

It's so much more work to get to the rocks, Jack. Willows are everywhere.
Winter 1978/79. First year in Alaska. 40 miles up the Nowitna. 50 or more willow Ptarmigan on every bend. Seen 100 a time or 2. Haven't seen a Ptarmigan on that river since!

Cool Tatiana. Your partridges were introduced over here. They do well in the sagebrush steppe areas adjacent to agricultural fields around here.

What do you call the first grouse? It looks very similar to our ruffed grouse.

jk Yes New Jersey was part of the pheasant hunting hey days in the 50's 60's &70's also Along with MD, New York, parts of VA & even some areas of New England and some places in W VA all had huntable populations of pheasants .At the same time some of the same states had huntable populations of Ruffed Grouse ,Bobwhite Quail and waterfowl . Pheasant hunting was incredibly popular in south central and southeastern PA The first several hours on opening day there was non stop shooting going on everywhere within hearing range .

Fourteen species; I didn't write down the total number of birds we had.

Some of my best days hunting where the times spent with family and friends just covering the countryside and hunting for whatever happened to be there as we hunted from one place to another .When I was working a trapline I was most happy on the days I had a mixed bag of fur And the same way with small game hunting . My goal when I was small game hunting was to let my feet take me where they wanted to go And be ready to shoot when the opportunity appeared .
