I've heard that sheep wool is used in felt. It is considered a cheap filler and the quality of those hats is not as good as those with a lot of beaver fiber.

I believe the next sale should be good. Small window between last sale and last recieving date for next sale. That's what I'm hoping. I could catch a ton of beaver between now and the last recieving date. Getting them all finished is another thing...

It's good you saved the better ones for FHA and sold your crappers in Klamath. The other way around. But since crappy beaver are worth more....

Scraping under ice beaver and watching a hockey game in shed last night. Great 1-2 , 3 being a celebratory beer when work finally ended. Will have a reasonable shipment for next FHA sale. Almost all Beaver/ Western Coyotes this time . Winter hanging in for another week here. Looks like enough snow to partially fill lakes and sloughs again… which we need after last summers drought

I'll stick my neck out and say we appear to have a felt market and a shearing market. Anything that's not a good northern under ice shearing skin will be a hatter. The damaged, or skins not quite shearable with the most under fur will be #1 hatters. The fall skins without sufficient underwool will be #2 hatters. There is a grade there. The felt market will last for several years 2-3 to come. Now, chop my head off.

Al, at what point will the felting trade demand that FHA grades out beaver according to #1, 2 and 3 felting grades? Maybe "demand" is too strong a verb but you get the gist.

The card game has changed so the players have to read the rules. ps for those that were watching GFW was indicating this last August of the hot market in their youtube clips and the ones on Sunday proved what he was paying...now...not in 6 months

But as of right now with Nafa long gone and FHA last standing auction house; gd dmg blanket beaver can be from Mississippi or Ontario and in the same string right? Last June I didn't see any different prices for strings of gd dmg.
But without question the northern gd dmg is likely to yield far more felt than its Mississippi counterpart.

Gd Dg is a heavy or semi skin with damage.(1's quality with damage) Reg dmg is the beaver with less underfur(2's quality with dmg) Poor dmg is early and late skins with damage (3 and 4 quality with damage)
I's and I-II's quality are shearable(has underfur),so gd dmg is shearable. II's III's and IV's are not shearable(no or little underfur) grades. So reg dmg and pr dmg are not shearable grades.
You guys need to brush up on beaver grading in the FHA fur handling manual. The Felt makers only care about the underfur, dont care about damage (unless its rotten and all the hair fell out).

Have you seen any strings of reg or poor dmg the last few years? I've only seen gd dmg. So I go back to the idea that all of the dmg beaver are together as far as I can tell. If I don't have that right I would be glad to know how.
