If I were to have a new heat pump installed how much should I figure on it costing me? The heat pump I currently have is about 27 years old, I do not think it is energy efficient and I am thinking of just getting a new one before this one is cooked.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

I just replaced a 26 yo one in August, supposed to be MUCH more efficient.
BUT, our electric rates ent up, so not seeing a difference in Cost.
Slated to.go.up again this summer.
Probably be even more $$$$ with old unit
Thanks Joe!!!!

It is a large Bi-Level house that had two additions over the years, I don't know how many sq ft it is. It has 9 vents, or maybe they are called ducts, if that helps.

Our rates went up too and the cost really went up, I am hoping a new unit would drop the cost of heating our home for this past year.

Nittany Lion, heat pumps are far more efficient in the south. with the temps you have up there, your heat strips will be running all the time just to keep up during the winter. A new heat pump is definitely more efficient. I would look at natural gas furnace. The square footage is paramount in selecting the appropriate size unit. down here we tend to upsize ours due to the heat and humidity of summer. our winters are mild so the heat pump rarely needs the boost from the heat strips.

Adding insulation to your house attic and sealing as many air leaks as possible in your house is how you can save money on heat/cool bills. Have an energy audit done a blower door test. Check with your state for any rebates for having such things done. Is your heat pump in the attic or the basement? is the duct work metal? Is it insulated duct with 3" insulation? Is the ductwork connections sealed so that no air escapes the ductwork? All these questions if done are how you save money. A new system that leaks air into the attic and the house insulation isn't enough for the climate zone, still won't save you money. Start with the energy audit and they will tell you how to save money and what to do to fix where your loosing heat. Don't just guess about it.

All I want to know for the present time is a ballpark figure on what a new heat pump would cost installed.

If I had natural gas that would be my go to heat source especially for you location. If electric is your only option then I would have to balance energy savings against equipment cost. The tonage of the equipment the type of heat SEER (efficiency) rating and the location in the structure can all effect pricing as can the brand of equipment. Definitely shop around.

Nittany Lion you’re welcome. That is the average price for a replacement here in SWVA depending on the size of unit you install. I was an HVAC technician for over a decade and still keep in touch with my previous employer. Eric
