ok guys looking to do a do it yourself hunt, any place that one can still do this? if not anyone that no's a good guide I think you can still do the "haul road" hunt. I was preparing to do that hunt a few years back, it's an adventure to say the least.

Haul road or hire an air service to drop you off. Haul road is bow only unless you hike off it 5 miles. 5 miles of tundra is not a pleasant hike.

Can you drive meat from Alaska to Canada to lower 48 if you did this hunt? In 2019 we hauled caribou meat and antlers back through Canada. We also brought back some ptarmigan. We just had to declare what we had at the borders. This was not our preferred way to carry the antlers but we didn’t have room in the truck. It drew more attention than I wanted but all the comments we heard were positive. We had a Honda generator back there too powering the chest freezer that was in the truck as we went down the road.

I did the Haul rd twice. Never killed anything but had a few close encounters. But never made the shot.
I was stalking this bull In the road side ditch. And all of a sudden a major cruise line buss stops to watch.

I did a drop camp hunt on the Sag River. Airboat ride in and back out. Killed a young bull.

I done the haul road hunt in 2002. I had a buddy that lived in fairbanks we borrowed 2 horses and headed towards Prudhoe Bay. When we got approximately 100 miles from Prudhoe Bay we started seeing caribou. That night we slept in the truck. In the morning we spent most of the day hiking in. For some reason the horses didn't want to cooperate when we tried to ride them so we ended up leading them. Let me tell you walking 5 plus miles in the tundra is brutal. I ended up killing one late in the afternoon. We gutted it and went back to the truck in the morning we we went back in and packed it back out with the horses. It was one of the most demanding things I have ever done and I consider my self to be in good shape. After you get past Fort Yukon the services are very limited. If you drive take lots of spare tires. We ruined one and had 2 flats on the way home.
Won't take no prisoners, won't spare no lives.

I did a drop camp hunt on the Sag River. Airboat ride in and back out. Killed a young bull. My son In Law and I did that. But we flew In and then we had are own inflatable and we floated out. We made a 5 day trip out of It but if you were In a hurry you could make It In 2. We both got our bulls. But the fishing was out of this world. Can't remember what pump station we got out at. But our truck was dropped off there. We drove to Happy Valley then flew In from there. Flying In only cost us 80.00 each. But that has changed by a bunch.
