I have spent a fair amount of time in a wall tent hunting with friends and never really had a bad experience. One guy I go with quite a bit tends to "spread out" during the hunt. He brings a ton of stuff, way more than is needed, and it kind of ends up everywhere after a few days. I just get used to walking around his stuff, it used to bother me a little but I just decided it wasn't worth stressing over. When I find his things piled on my bunk I do draw the line at that.

Way back when I was working as a timber cruiser in the summers ,I lived 20 days at a time with 3 other guys in 2 canvas wall tents. One for bunking and one for cooking.
All were good guys except one-who was a college guy from up south who knew nothing about living in the bush and didnt seem interested in learning.

I did a float hunt in Alaska with a friend that purchased a bear book to read at night. After 2 days of reading, he freaked his self out so bad he would not leave camp! I shot a big bull moose and packed all the meat back alone. When we returned home, he apologized but needless to say, last hunt with him.

I met a guy years ago I believe it was when he was in the Coast Guard in the 50’s who did mapping on the west coast of Alaska. He had a partner and they were dropped off each summer on mountain tops doing mapping. He said they got along by not talking for the week but had reading material for their off time. On the weekends they talked and the subjects were what they read all week and not idle talk. They lasted as a team for several summers and he said that was the reason!

This one comes to mind. Four of us flew in on this hunt. One of the guys was an unknown quantity to us, he'd been invited along by a friend. It was a good trip for me shooting a nice black bear and this bull.

Things went along okay until it came time to lug the meat. This bull was shot about two miles from the nearest lake a plane could land on to retrieve the meat. I don't remember how far it was from base camp, three or four miles if I remember right.

The four of us lugged as much as we could the afternoon I shot it and hunted our way back out the following day to retrieve some more. It was late in the afternoon as we started back to drop off another load. I guess things were going okay until it got dark and we were fighting our way through a spruce swamp. The fellow who was the unknown quantity sat down and refused to move. Just sat there in the dark and refused to budge. We had to coax, threaten and plead with the guy to get him to move. He just sat there and yelled at us.

Needless to say, that was his last invite. I've found you really don't know what you've got until you're out there with them.

I use to spend 10 to 14 or 15 days camping in the National forest in W VA We started out using a pop up camper That thing was not designed for cold weather use. Some times it was just 2 in camp sometimes it was up to 5 Bottom line it was not how many but who those other people where . After several years of pop up camping the owner stopped going to W VA because of the increased bag limits and length of season in his home state A couple of us went together and got a well made wall tent We spend some money on getting a floor for it plus heavy duty canvas for the tent itself We got a ventless propane heater with a thermostat We also got two propane cooking stoves a shower encloser Several sturdy and well insulated coolers .It was like night and day compared to the pop up It was a very comfortable arrangement The hunting was generally good enough that we did not lose interest IF the weather was crappy it was plenty of room at camp for us al to have or ow space O f course we had so much gear that it meant yo needed to set up some place you could drive too . And the tent was easy to put up so even if the weather was ugly we could be far enough alone that we where warm and dry until the weather improved so we could finish later One of the worst things about the trip was getting all the things you needed to take along with you. We would stop archery hunting in our home state and pack our gear in our trucks and drive 4 hours to our destination there . Since we would be hunting the last 2 weeks of archery and the first 2 or 3 days of gun deer season That required taking almost twice as much equipment And if someone in camp was working on your nerves the hunting was And the hunting could be as die hard or as easy as you wanted it to be by just hanging out at camp Any kind of camping in the. Wilderness is not for everyone .But in my 50 plus years of hunting my time spent tent camping was some of the best days of my life Hunting in the mountains , learning the terrain and food sources and travel ways of the game you were after was a challenge But with a proper frame of mind it was just a matter of telling your self what you needed to do on that day And not get upset thinking about the next day . To get prepared go there and set up ,locate some good spots to hunt and take one and sometimes 2 deer back home was a feeling of accomplishment that was very special to me .I would highly recommend to anyone thinking about it to do your homework and do it Sucess might not be measured in how many animals you kill And it could well be a life long memory just because you went .

I've got almost 40 years experience spending weeks at a time with total strangers in remote camps. Tents cabins, flys you name it. I've had a few crazies, but just a few. Most were great guys and ladies and many have become lifelong friends. My fishing business and my big game guiding job has allowed me to meet and become friends with people I would have never had the chance to get to know otherwise. I've enjoyed every minute of it. Everyone is different; there isnt a better way to get to know someone than spending time with them in the middle of nowhere. I've learned things from clients that I could never have learned any other way.
