In Klamath Falls Or. its illegal to kick the heads off of snakes in town.

When the town was first built they had wooden sidewalks and its near the river, garden snakes would stick thier heads up between the boards and scare the ladies. Guys would kick them and the snake would fall down and rot under the boardwalk.
