I I sold 187 rats 11 beaver and two otter yesterday. Got a 250 average on the rats. Got 25 and 30 on two otter that were put up as were the rats. Also sold another 11 beaver with a high of 32 and low of five. The beaver were not put up. I am glad I did not have high expectations and that is all I will say about that.

Was just over a $14 a piece average. Three were five dollars three were 10 f o u r at 20 and one at 32. I think I could have done better.

this sounds like a stupid question, but most fur buyers want the hides fleshed, right? Groenwold probably doesn’t pay anymore for fleshed beaver as he has a machine that does fleshing in less than a minute.

If your gonna sell green & frozen beaver to GFW I think it's to your advantage to freeze the pelts folded in half length-way/linear from nose to tail base....the fold being the backbone ridge. Not only does this make the pelt appear slightly larger but it is the way Gary G said to freeze them.
I'm not sure how the op presented his beavers but I did see some at recent stops that were frozen balled up and the averages were several dollars lower.
Also...fold otter in half....opposite the beaver way.....you want the nose touching tail base when frozen...fold is in mid-section of pelt.

Swamp, the two otters were f l e s h e d and stretched and the Beaver were skinned folded and Frozen exactly like you described the way I always do when I sell them green. Like nimsy says it is more of a convenience thing.

Ok.....makes me wonder if the beaver buying frenzy isn't already softening a bit.....but that was only 11 beavers you sold, so.... $14 seems like a low avg for the sizes you mentioned.

That's what I thought also that the beaver prices were a little on the low side. My elderly memory is showing through because it was Guy I sold to not Gary.

Those beaver prices do not resonate well with what happened at the MTPCA sale yesterday.

Sounds pretty low Walt but they were only rough skinned so it saves a lot of work on your end. I dropped furs off Saturday at the FHA truck and there were more people there than there was in January. Looked mostly like beaver judging from the sacks of fur.
55 years trapping. It's who I am. Every day is still as exciting as it was when I was a kid but a little more work.

Sounds like it won't take lower 48 trappers long to flood their beaver market again.

I'm not sure there are enough trappers left that know how to put up beaver (in big numbers) to get beaver levels back to what they were when we had two Canadian auction houses. Even if the May sale has double what March had it will not even be close to the numbers produced just 10-15 years ago.

True...but a slight increase in current production may easily satisfy the felt market.

True...but a slight increase in current production may easily satisfy the felt market. From what I'm reading there is strong growth worldwide in felt hats. The main concern I have is that they look for cheaper sources of raw felt to satisfy that demand.

Cheaper sources, you mean synthetic? That would be a shame. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on a switch to possum felt! Lol

Not sure how close you are to Weibkes, Muskratwalt, but I sold a few dried beaver to him the other day for a LOT more than that. No I won't post prices on here.
Might be worth a try is all. Tell it Calvin! Your post is useless without posting the prices....lol

I am not sure. I always sold to Jason at the Winter meeting and was extremely happy. Then again, Matt Carlson has treated me great and is 10 miles away. Even better is that I have gotten lazy and he will buy my stuff green.
