There are lots of good kids. You hardly ever hear about them because their stories aren't dramatic or sensational and they don't make the news. And complaining about negative crap seems to be a lot more popular here on Tman and in society in general than talking about positive stuff.
The town nearest my camp in north central PA has a high school trap shooting team that practices at my gun club. Most of them are good kids who practice hard and did quite well in competition last year.
I go to a couple of county fairs each year and it is great to see the amount of work the 4H kids put into their animals and entries and the pride they take in that. I'm betting most of them are good kids.
My neighbors down the street did a fantastic job of raising their son. I've known him since he was little, he's twenty-two now. He got into the Boy Scouts and eventually became an Eagle Scout. I wrote a letter of recommendation for him to the Eagle Scout Review Board. He went to Vo-Tech for diesel mechanics and had a great-paying job waiting for him when he graduated.
Neither of his parents hunt or have any interest in the shooting sports so it's a mystery where his love of all things hunting and gun-related comes from. I have been guiding him in those pursuits since he was 12-13 years old. I helped him track and recover his first two deer, we shoot together on a regular basis and he is now a member of my camp. He is a really good kid.
Eh...wot?

All three of my daughters were taught the value of hard work at an early age. They always helped me with the chores around the house like processing firewood, shoveling snow, lawn care, keeping up with the garden. They used to muck stables at local horse farms in exchange for riding lessons. When they got a little older they worked with me as part of the construction crew. They all grew up shooting, fishing, trapping and hunting with me. My youngest skinned hundreds of foxes and they all helped process game. They are all hard-working adults now with great jobs. They are all really good kids. My youngest and trapping partner at the time. My middle daughter practicing with a flintlock. My oldest shooting trap. My girls after a near perfect round of trap. And last but not least, my granddaughter and current trapping partner.
Eh...wot?

Wow. Proud parents and it makes a guy proud just reading about them.
My oldest son was a bit wild, good but wild, he will be coming out if the Air Force next year an E-9 Chief Master Sergeant of Air Force. I’m proud for sure. The other two do very well also.
Most proud however of the 12,000 or so school kids in Minnesotas trap shooting sport again this year. This year the team I coach has 8 young ladies on board, the most ever. Two are applying for and have very good “shots” at getting scholarships in the sport for college.

I retired from 30 years of teaching this year. Went back and taught ag for 13 weeks. Just got called they fired my replacement so, I am going back to work for 6 more weeks, finish out the school. I still coach softball. Why is this relevant? I get to teach and be with the greatest students-kids-people in the world! Our kids are awesome, we have so few problems, and they are just good people. I tell my students this often cause they do not hear it enough.
My children and grandchildren I could not be more proud of. They are awesome as well.

I had one almost 45 years ago that was a great influence on me. He left teaching, when back to active duty USMC. Looked him up a couple years ago, did great things in mil, retired, then went BACK to teaching! And writing. And researching. And... And he's STILL at it!

I am really impressed by y'all's kids. Great job parents, grandparents and mentors. My oldest. I trust her to do anything. Smart, drama free, caring and tough. Very high integrity. A little too stubborn at times....but was born a leader. She has a 4.0 in chemical engineering, is a D1 college athlete and comes home every weekend. Calls her mother everyday. Still helps her old Dad cut firewood and loves running the line with him. She is getting ready to take the MCAT and will be off to medical school in a couple years. Sky is the limit. I talked to her about this thread. She agrees there are still plenty of great young people in this country. She also agrees that some of them need to kick it in gear.

A couple of kids (12 and 13) who live up the street from me called me at 7 this morning and asked if I would haul them and their jon boat a few miles to a local lake. They are on spring break, and they know I have a flexible schedule.
So I back up to their place, they hitch the boat trailer up to my truck, I drive to the lake, back down the ramp, they hop out, put the boat plug in, load up their gear, connect the trolling motor, direct me down the ramp, and launch their boat. I never got out of the truck from the time I arrived at their place until I got back home. Of course before I pulled out of the ramp I made sure they had their PFD's on, which they did.
They called me a couple hours later to come pick them up. I again repeated the procedure; never had to get out of the truck. They had their 10 trout limit, plus one, they "miss-counted". Oh well.
I was pretty impressed as to how competent they were; except for their math skills.
