Just learn how to belay a cleat properly and quick without getting your arms pulled out when handling big engined boats. People often think they can make a difference by throwing a wrap around a cleat and then try to slow a heavy boat down etc. YOU CAN"T .. seen quite a few folks get hurt trying that crap... don't be one of them

What does a deckhand do on a tow boat?
The entry-level position on a towing vessel is called a Deckhand on inland towboats or an Ordinary Seaman on coastal tugboats. These crewmembers prepare barges for loading and unloading cargo, build tows and perform basic vessel maintenance and housekeeping duties.
Housekeeping duties? Does that include cleaning the head and swabbing the deck ?

I’ve worked a bit as an AB and an OS and have had to clean the head.

Deckhands are like the Navy's "boatswain mates", with other duties such as cooking meals for the crew when not engaged in other on deck duties.

Cookin meals- OH BOY One of the best jobs on a Tug! When you're done the evening meal and clean up, you're off until the next a.m. unless you have to do underway deck work.

Cookin meals- OH BOY Yeah apparently we gotta do our own cooking and generally who ever is pretty good at it and likes doing it just kinda becomes the cook, which honestly I wouldn't mind, I like cooking for people Learn to make good homemade biscuits, peanut butter cookies, and always have HOT coffee. NEVER serve cold sandwiches for any meals and try to make sure the "old timers" don't put Vodka in the water cooler if there is one onboard! . . . and ALWAYS keep the Capt. happy! :-)

Wolfy, if you can do that, then you're gonna make it big time with just about any Tugboat crew!! Some companies give the cook free unlimited reign to shop for the best food products at stores and even have them delivered to the boat :-)

You will be golden Wolfie. Best place on board any boat is the galley. You tussle up meals like that and others will be on deck in crap weather . On the dive boat, our cook was from India and when the rest of the deck hands where on anti rust duty, he was in his galley and when they did stowing of tanks etc in port he was strolling on the markets getting things. He was the only deck hand on board that did not have a splotch of paint on his coveralls

I knew you liked to cook Wolfie. I figured that was right up your galley. Pole your mates and figure out what they like and do not .Serve the the one that pisses you off cold food or something he hates and he will tow the line real fast . You will be golden Wolfie.
