Has anyone tried purchasing an outboard motor from an online dealer? I am looking at a 40 hp tiller and see prices "shipped" that are $2,000-2,500 less than any local dealer quotes I have tried.

For the record, I am skeptical. I did order a furnace and A/C unit for my home from an online retailer with no issues at all and it saved me several thousand dollars, sooo? Just curious if anyone here as made that kind of purchase?

I ordered a small Tohatsu once that worked out ok. I looked into a 40 tiller one time, it was a year old with full warrantees. Apparently some of the big fishing camps in Canada have/had an arrangement where they get new engines every year from manufacturer or big wholesaler and get sold off as "new, ish"

I didn't go with it as I took the info to a local dealer and negotiated a close enough price...but he was wild about it. Not sure if those deals are available anymore but it was a great price.

Be very careful many of those are based overseas, lotta unseen import and arrange fees.
A friend deals with an outfit from southern Ohio I think, does better than locally all in but I’m not sure they go as large a motor as you want.

What are your perameters, I’ve got a brand new 50hp mercury still in the crate unopened here. 4 stroke tiller all the bells and whistles in my shop. Client changed their mind and went bigger. I’d sell.

Just west of you in east Bethel is a place called boat world. I drove up there over a weekend to buy a new honda 40HP with a tiller. Was pretty reasonable. Stay away from tohatsu. I bought a nissan which I discovered is chinese. Same company identical motors as tohatsu. Never was happy with it. lots of problems. Biggest was finding someone who would work on it. Mercury is Chinese now too but lots of shops will work on them at least. That honda is a pleasure to use. Electric trim. Has an alternater. Real quiet and low fuel consumption.

Small Mercs and Tohatsus are the same.

I have a Tohatsu 40 HP on my 16 foot Mirrocraft. I really like it. Only problem I ever had with it was the hydraulics went out. You are right in saying it's hard to find anyone who will work on it. I did find a small outboard repair guy who worked on it. He said a Merc hydraulic would work and he fixed it.

Lots of scams out there with outboards that seem super cheap. Do your research, both forwards and backwards.

I looked at some last year but for me the shipping made buying local cheaper.

I might be interested. I'm not sure if my 16' Lund Stinger is rated for a 50, but it could be. I'll do some checking when I get home. I'm in Fargo this week, but I'll take a look when I get back home.
