Stopped at one place next to the property my wife’s family sold I heard 2 groups of roosting birds and a single way down the draw. Worked my way through the cedar branches down to the creek then down the creek to within 100 yards. Normally I’d be hunting the other side of the fence and when I did the birds would be on the side I’m on now. LOL My guess 15-18 birds mixed on the roost the other group maybe a handful on that roost bunch.
They called I called they gobbled but did not fly down until an hour after sunrise, then then hung on the ground a while and moved off and shut down. Headed out drove by another spot on the way home seen a small group on a hillside with a strutting bird. Went a few more miles by some old farm places, I could see turkeys in the ditch across from an old farm in a place full of downed trees and taller grass. The next place was a landowner I trap for so I swung in and got the OK to work those birds.
I took a trail to the back of that abandon farm place and used the old house that was falling down for cover also it narrowed the tree belt to a better shooting distance if I made it to the middle of it. One lone broken bale next to an old road was a good place to set up but the tree snags made it tough to see very far. It took about 20 minutes of talking to get the hens to check out the calling they came up close to my left but no Tom in the bunch, looked like he was circling away from the hens route but crossed in front of me at about 15 yards BOOM!
