Crossbred does not necessarily mean bad genetics. In fact I would take that crossbred over a pure Angus any day. Better yet give me a Hereford.

I recently bought a registered Black Hereford bull. Yes there is such a thing. Got him for a good price because they’re not real popular here yet.

Once upon a time, we raised both hogs and beef cattle. As a kid, hogs were pure Hampshire, which kinda sucked. They were replaced by pure Yorkshires, which were good mothers, but not very good eating. So the Yorks were crossed with Spotted Poland China boars and the offspring were way better. Think black baldy cattle for comparison. The barrows bottom gilts were sold for meat, top half of gilts saved for sow replacements. So the york/spot gilts were then crossed with pure meat type duroc boars. Now a funky looking sometimes white, sometimes red hog with spots......a 3 way terminal cross. We sold our hogs at KC stockyards and whatever top price for hogs was that day, we got it.

The black baldy cattle make excellent mothers and steers, but for most commercial cattle, you want your mothers to be crossbread, but bull to be pure and a good beef bull at that. That is how you get best offspring.....3 way terminal cross.......with half the genetics coming from the pure bull.

We eventually got to the point we had to pick hogs or cattle and we kept the cattle. We sold purebred bulls, but time and again, guys would come to look at them, could not afford the price, so went to the sale barn and bought a cross bred that had not been cut. What should have been a fine eating steer became a bull that would not breed true. They got calves, but not as good as they could have been.
