Does a guy need to put acorns in hot water (don't know temp) to kill the worms but not so hot to kill the acorn. Or can a guy just freeze them ?

Sawtooths are hit or miss it seems. I know of a grove that doesn’t produce at all, then we got 3 that keep deer and hogs occupied for a month or more. They drop early here, like now and over the rest of this month.

As far as I know if there are worms in them they will not sprout.

Thanks, I ordered a few from Chief River Nursery the other day. I'm anxious to try some of these swamp White Oaks on my property. I could be wrong but my understanding is they don't have to be planted in a swamp

You are correct. That's why I do the float test so I can remove the non-viable ones before I plant. I don't know how that weevil gets in there but it's amazing how many acorns have a weevil.

We have an oak here that has huge acorns. Big as a wlnut with the hull still on. Is that what your talking about?

To my knowledge I don't think I've seen a swamp white acorn in person, so I am not sure.

Sounds like Burr Oak. Best way to propigate Oaks is let the Squirrel do the planting, I have sprouts all over the place!

Yeah, or you could use the tool I bought, which is literally called "The Squirrel." smile

The caps on the bur oaks are affixed so darn tight to the acorn. I'm not sure if the Bur oak cap needs to be removed before planting

I read that swamp White Oaks don't necessarily have to be planted in a swamp. I may try some on my dry land to add diversity

No swamp needed. They can tolerate moist soil. I have several in my yard (sent zagman some) which is on a hill.

I’ve also read that swamp white oak acorns have a stem, unlike other white oaks. SWO is one of the “minor” members of the oak family but it’s been getting a lot of attention in urban plantings because it tolerates urban conditions very well.

Of the 15 I planted this spring, at least a dozen are doing well.

Eliminate competition for sunlight, moisture, and nutrients and lots of plants will grow in places you wouldn't normally find them
