My friend has honeysuckle growing around the base of about every tree in their yard. They cut it down every spring but it just comes back. Whats the best way to get rid of it? Should they just be pulling it out instead? Some chemical that doesnt kill the tree? Advice?

20% glyphosate on freshly cut stumps
cut about 6 inches above ground , and treat right away

that kills the stump without disturbing the soil

if you have small amounts and want to avoid killing anything else , you can be very precise in your application of Tordon RTU
https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/tordon-rtu-1-qt
it has a small dish detrurgent like cap to dispense

for big amounts crowding out your woods
if you can run a 3-5 person team

brush cutter operator
1-2 people moving the brush to piles
a chainsaw if you have larger brush
and a person following closely behind spraying all the ends

if just you , work one bush at a time , cut and treat

I know someone here said they make cuts on the bigger stuff about half way move up an inch and cut from the other side with the Milwaukee hatchet mini chain saw then treat the cuts , the brush dies and it is less handling of big brush

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Tordon actually can kill other nearby desirable trees, even via cut stump treatment, which is why I largely stopped using it.

Honeysuckle pulls out pretty easy. If you can't pull it by hand, hook a strap behind a truck or atv. If I can't pull it by hand, I use the Uprooter tool.

Milestone is the herbicide a forester recommended to me for it, though I haven't tried that 1.

If treating it w/ herbicide, wait to do so until it's leafed out. Right now the energy is pushing upward.

Fresh sprouts and small plants pull up by hand very easily, if your gonna cut and treat stumps, put cheap food color in the mix so you can see where you've treated.

I agree, but I've found it's much more effective and permanent if you do the cutting in late August or even better September. The plant starts pulling all it's energy into the root system then, and the poison you put on the stump will be drawn further into the root system. In the process of clearing 8 acres of mostly honeysuckle at my work, we even got a grant from the USDA. I've been able to use a skid steer for larger bushes, but those growing next to desired trees got the cut/poison treatment.

Sounds to me like he is talking about vine. I would try letting it grow some but keep it pulled off of the trees. When there is enough of the vine to treat, cover the tree and spray the vine with glyphosate.

Any type of herbicide and add some Dawn dish washing detergent. it removes the protective coating off the leaves and allows the herbicide to work. great for lily pad and ivy. Just don't get it on the tree leaves. The bark will protect the tree.

I pulled some today. I sure notice it now as I drive around the countryside on certain property. It's that time of year when it sticks out like a real sore thumb. Most property owners do nothing about it. It sure is a sprawling eye sore.

Most goats and sheep will eat honeysuckle. But I do agree with you that it grows in all the wrong places.

Most people don't realize how bad their honeysuckle is until this time of year when it sticks out like a sore thumb in the woods.

Good luck with the vines. I've been fighting them for years.

I've cut pulled 2m sprayed em and burned em and I still got em wrapped in my sweet shrub bush.

That's actually my next project..to cut and emote vines
.again.

After theyre cut..once they wilt good..you can just pull em and the vine will just slide off. I guess as it dies its grip loosens.

But you gotta do it over and over

IF IDIOTS GREW ON TREES THIS PLACE WOULD BE AN ORCHARD !

The ones I have aren't on vines. To my knowledge I've never seen one around here on a vine. I know the bush ones are a pain though.

GCP. You think he needs to do all that to kill honey suckle in his YARD!! Geez just spray it with round up . If it comes back here’s a BRILLIANT ideal spray it again !!!
I bet most people could get rid of it without getting a 2 man crew of drawing up a eradication plan . Heck I almost bet the guys wife can take a gal of ready to use round up and get rid of it with one hand !!!!!
