Ours starts Monday, May 1st. I am really looking forward to it this year. Suppose to rain most of next week. Turkeys will still fly down, a lot of hunters won't go out.

Ours starts Saturday April 29. I'm heading for camp Friday and staying up until Sunday May 7. I'm looking forward to a much needed break from work doing one of my favorite things; chasing thunder chickens around the mountains of north-central PA.

Eh...wot?

I don't hunt them myself but a member here inquired about coming to MN.
Said "Heck Yeah".

He and a buddy can stay at my cabin. A few phone calls to landowners around me and all said "Sure" smile have at it. cool

First day of my 6 day season here. Cold morning here! I use blinds and have two setup about 120 yards apart overlooking two different funnel areas. I set the blinds up about 10 days ago. We had two days of up to 50 mph wind a week ago. Today I went out and one in the heavier cover was good, the other was laying in the creek about 200 feet from where I had set up! I spend 20 minutes dragging moving and setting up and get in my chair and do one cluck and 3 jakes appear about 60 yards out and then 2 more flew in and landed right in the middle of them. Never heard them fly right over me! At first it was dark enough could not see the short beards but they hung around for half an hour and could see better then. The then fed and moved right up to the blind I was not in!!! Oh well it was a rush, all this taking place about 10 minutes after getting setup. Had a gobbler about 11 AM responding to me but would not come out of the neighbors pines. When I left at 11:30 AM to get to a meeting the jakes had settled in the woods about 300 yards from me and I spooked them. I enjoy spring turkey hunting. I can do several crossword puzzles while setting in my chair sipping coffee and hot chocolate.

That is a dandy Swamp Wolf!

Got them all over on the ranch but haven't hunting them. Got some guys coming in to hunt them and shouldn't be a problem harvesting some on the first day.

I was there working the other day and two hens came by and then two long beards following behind. The were less then 40 yards and never even looked my way.

Heading to the PNW Saturday the 29th. Arrive that Saturday and plan to get settled in, buy my license for Washington and get to hunting…or may go fishing, lol. Sunday I’ll definitely be hunting. Monday I’ll head to Montana for a few days or however long it takes to find a bird and kill it. Then I’ll head back to Washington or maybe Idaho and hunt until I kill a couple. I had no clue until recently, but I have a buddy coming to Washington to hunt and I’ll hook up with him the following week. After or between hunts I’ll be doing some fishing. Hoping to catch more smallmouths and trout. And I found out another Lake has Tiger Musky…whatever that is, but I hope to catch one!

For those of you that hunt them, do you eat them bigger Tom's and if yes how do you clean/cook them?

I give away the meat to relatives. Sons from this year we crockpot cooked and it was pretty decent. I used to hunt until the end of legal time (1:00), hunt all the time, etc. Lately I hunt until about 9:00. Have hunted three times: opening day toms were 100 yards away strutting with hens, two days later sat there and they were where I was the first time, Monday hunted at first place-two hens jake and tom flew down 15 yards away. Tom immediately saw me and quickly walked away before I could get the gun ready, another tom flew down away from me taking hens with him, tried to cut off a third tom and hen but they beat me to, and past, the cut off spot. That was before 8:00. Will try again Sat/Sun.

Breast em out. Cut into strips or small nuggets. Batter and fry. Much milder than store bought turkey breast.

Thighs and legs..not my thing.

I have not shot one in years . Tags and stamps are to expensive for what I get out of it. That said I do take the kids because they like it. Honestly I don't do hardly any harvesting myself instead enjoy taking the kids hunting everything.

I had a thread on turkey seasion this year. Bothe my boys tagged out opening morning on public land the first day of youth seasion [Linked Image]

The one on the right is 10 and the left is 12.

Now there has been a tom or two on the farm I could go after but honestly I would rather enjoy seeing him and watching him all year instead of killing him for a few lb of turkey breast.
I guess it goes back to when I was q4 and there were few turkey around I killed one in my first 30 mins of hunting. Repeated that the meat time I went at 16 and its fun just not been exciting to me.

Now taking the kids that is where it's at with absolutely any hunting.

What Swamp said about cooking them. You can batter them in Cajun fish batter and give them a little twang. To me it’s much better than store bought and juicier.
