Set down to do a little turkey calling this afternoon. Had not been set up but around 20 minutes when I spotted a coyote coming in looking for the hen turkey he had heard. He turned broad sided at 62 steps and met a load of 8.5 TSS. He spun around several times in his tracks but did not leave his tracks. Those are some great shooting shells. .410?

ADC: No it was a 3inch 12 GA. I have a youth 20 GA that I am thinking about giving a try with the TSS. I’ve been shooting a Youth 870 20ga for the last 7-8 years now and we loaded TSS before it was even a thing. 3” #8.5 or 9 or even 10’s do a number on turkeys and hogs, lol. I’ve patterned to 42 ranged yards with a beautiful pattern. I’ve “accidentally” made kills a lot farther. When you take a Southerner with a bunch of trees to estimate range and stick him in the prairies of the Midwest, his ranging skills are useless, lol! I topped my gun with a FFIII and a Sumtoy choke and it is deadly. To me a 12ga and TSS is way over kill. I’d still be using lead if it shot a 12. Besides I’m lazy and refuse to carry a 12ga with TSS or lead, lol! Plus that kick isn’t something I looked forward to when patterning different loads. And if you’re doubting a 20ga, I’ve killed a public land grand slam without decoys, so it will get the job done no matter where you are.

I have never seen anything pattern like the herters 20g #9 I shot bought to check out the federal was Also nice but not as tight and pattern density not as good. No experience on how it makes living critters dead yet becuse I opted for the boys to hunt wth tradional win 3"#5 due to cost, lack of time to get more and fine tune sights and the lead shot was good enough for the sub 40 yard shots the 10 and 12 year old would be taking and larger pattern was probably beneficial considering they both shot their birds between 13 to 17 yards in very thick undergrowth.
The tss was very impressive pattering for sure.

I have only ever killed turkies with 20g lead or bow same for my boys.. 20g has no problem getting it done from us also. I like thin short and light guns.

Well definitely don't want to get into another TSS debate but yes they are awesome to say the least. My boy converted over to them and bought a Indian Creek choke tube the same as I have this year. We hunted three days in Kansas then 3 in Nebraska then came home to hunt Ohio and now PA for this weekend. I wouldn't want anything else in my gun. My boy shot one at 80 yards, certified with a rangefinder, I probably wouldn't have killed that bird because of distance but now I'd take it. His gobbler flew down with three hens and the hens were about to take him away. We are both more than ample callers so the get better at calling is BS. Now with our setup you really have to be on them at close range. Get rid of them yotes!

Well the TSS are great but when you miss one at 50 yards like I did this morning it will humble you. I just made a quick shot and I know better than do it but I did it. I just started using it but a red dot on a shotgun with the right stock cheek riser to get the eye where it belongs is Nice , you can zero for the center of your pattern and there is no guess work dot on target squeeze through I did miss a clay with it the other day but when the trigger broke I knew it was all me trying to go too fast
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

If you use a 12ga…go with lead, too many good shells out there. If you use a 20ga and sit in a blind over decoys go with lead, too many good shells out there.
If you hunt turkeys how turkeys are supposed to be hunted and use a smaller gauge, go with TSS. Not all my shots are perfect scenario shots. Broomsedge in the South, prairie grass in the Midwest, and thick brush in the PNW will impede some of your pellets. With more pellets in the TSS smaller gauge loads I know I’ll have plenty left to kill that bird. I’m not talking about taking bad shots, but it happens that the bird may not exactly come in the “opening” you’re hoping he will. In fact, I’d say 75% of the time they don’t. There is always some unknown that you can’t see that will cause that bird to skirt your setup of come in from a different area. When I have an opening, I’m taking the shot and killing that bird. BUT, you have to KNOW what your gun is capable of before doing so. I’ll shoot my gun next to anyones 12 gauge and show you the difference. Everyone hates on patterning, but will go broke finding the right bullet for their deer/elk/bear rifle, lol.

I will agree that it works very well. In the 20 ga and smaller it turns them into very effective turkey killers. I also shoot Apex #4 TSS for coyotes out of my 20 ga. I really don't know how far it will kill one, but out to 50 which has been the longest so far. It will pass completely through one. It has the energy and also the pellet count.

Well....I purchased a Carlson TSS .640 choke for my Rem870 Special Purpose turkey gun. Wasn't sure if going that tight was gonna work with the 3" TSS 7 & 9. It was an unsure purchase to buy the .640 TSS choke....but after reading up on it a bit....I bought one.
The factory x-full choke (that came with the gun years ago) is .687. It did OK with 3" #5s turkey loads and just OK with 3" # 5 LBXRs. I never fired a TSS round at paper thru the .687.
I measured exactly 50yds and fired 1 of those $15 rounds. To say I was impressed is an understatement!!!
I also shot a 3" #5 LBXR thru the .640 at 50yds that day....pellet count density not even close to the TSS round.
Talking 12 gauge here...^^^^^;;

Swamp I used the guides guns in Mexico…one was an 870 and I’m not sure of the choke, but they had 3” LBXR’s #5 and I thought #6. That stuff restored my faith in lead with a 12ga. I know it’s not TSS comparable, but I was really impressed with the killing power at 37yds. I won’t go into detail but it made for a delicate picture, lol.

Ok serious question here. I hear creat things about how effective TSS is and how it extends range. I haven't been turkey or waterfowl hunting in years But y'all are talking about #9, #8, etc. shot. How many pellets to the ounce? A 30" pattern is still 30", who is plucking all those pellets out of the bird?

They make head shots only! I understand that, but at extended ranges, 30" is more than a head. How many pellets of TSS small shot to the ounce. I'm guessing I don't want to bite down on one of them pellets?
